Greets.
I'm not typically one for creating new topics without just cause, but this one is here because you've demanded to totally ignore my feelings, trample my creativity, and stifle any wishes I may have to title my own works. In other words, some of you don't like what I've named Reality Blurs' World of High-Flying Kung-Fu Fantasy.
For those that haven't read about it, here's the set-up.
Katana: Samurai Steampunk
No one knows exactly when the unfeeling hand of darkness fell across the Bright Empire, only that one morning, the sky was not so blue and the clouds were not so white.
The ancients still among us say that the Empire has lost its soul and that is why things are not quite right in the world. Fat merchants discount their words and say that the Empress sits upon her Lotus Throne, so how could anything be wrong? Wise men sip their sake and say no more while their zealous wards often reply in outrage that the Way has been lost. Those words are often their last as they are taken away to the Blue Bamboo Forest and never seen again.
Even the lowliest peasants know that such machines as the Bamboo Abominations of Tso-Ling did not enforce the Empire’s will in their father’s time, nor did they have dreams of the Seven Dark Samurai like their children do.
Recently, the wind whispers rebellion. Will you heed its call?
* * *
The challenge for you? Come up with a better name. Sell me on why it's a better name and create good karma for you and your descendants. I'm not entirely inflexible, if I see something truly awe-inspiring, I may well use it.
Remember, the honor of your ancestors rests upon your shoulders.
Regards,

I put in a yes vote because I don't dislike the name. it says exactly what the game is.
That said, the name could be a little more "wow", if you know what I mean. Say... MEKatana: Samurai Steampunk, or similar.

Gotta agree with Ed on this one. Steampunk Samurai is more evocative. _________________ - Brent 'thwaak' Wolke

I like the name as it stands.
Steampunk Samurai sounds more like the name of a band than a game. _________________ "Last Wish? I wish...you had...more time..." |

Its not that I hate the name, its just that I think a better descriptive name like you did with Runepunk would be more attention getting. Like the Katanik or Katanika
Steampunk Samurai is good, but I like the idea of a blended name better.
Katanapunk
Steamkatana
Samuraipunk
Steamsamurai
Just throwing stuff out now. I'll keep thinking.
And thanks for humoring me in my madness. _________________ a trai en pace,

Hmmm. Not awe-inspiring, but intriguing in its sublimeness.

Well, I obviously haven't gotten to play in the setting, but I must say none of the combination names bandied about have enough flow to live up to my impressions of the setting description.
The only suggestion I can offer is a name that's actually japanese such as Tetsukami/Tetsugami (iron spirit). Of course I'm just a fan of japanese culture and language, get your own expert before just using somethiing like that.
I looked up steam powered, but Kiryoku Samurai doesn't flow off the tongue for westerners, so there you go. _________________ Byron

Tetsukami
One vote from me!
That being said, there are marketing concerns with such a name, but, it will attract the attention of anyone who recognizes Japanese words when they see them, which should be anyone who would be interested in Samurai settings to being with.
Just a thought, I think this would be a mondo cool name. Maybe even through Savage in front of it. _________________ In Greek "heresy" means "choice".

Uh, I'm interested and it means nothing to me.
Everyone more or less knows what 'samurai' and 'steampunk' mean. Using something obscure to attract a niche of a niche of a niche, or counting on people saying, "I wonder what that means?" to get them to pick up the book is not, IMHO, a good idea.
'Steampunk Samurai' does roll nicely off the tongue, however. _________________ Butch Curry

As I told razorwise earlier today: A Japanese word for the book name would not only put me off the book but disgust me to no end and I'd end up ranting about it to my friends again.
Sure, I'm not the target audience, but word-of-mouth is the maker or breaker. _________________ Proud Savagepedia contributor.

So is it hate for the Japanese, or foreign languages in general? Seems kind of harsh that you'd have to go rant to your friends about the name of a game setting because it was a Japanese word. Disgust? Samurai is a Japanese word.
Could always use a word from the language spoken by more people on the planet than any other... Chinese.

I'm in the camp with the flippers as well. Katana: Steampunk Samurai has a nicer ring. _________________ Considering the alternative, life is just fine. |

I have to say I think the setting would be served by another name.
First, I don't think it's evocative of the setting which seems to be the introduction of steamtech to (or perhaps "versus") Japanese culture.
I also don't like using the term, "Steampunk," in the name. While there is steamtech, I think the "punk" reference disables the Japanese feel. Plus combining it as "Samurai Steampunk" seems to indicate that the two work together, but the text seems to indicate that the two are more at odds.
Too bad Leagion Publishing already has "Empire of Silk and Steel" because I think "Empire of Silk and Steam" would have been a great name.
As it is, I think maybe a single Japanese name with an English subtitle may be the way to go. Something like...
Joukido: The Way of Steam
If nothing else, that could make a good chapter name for how steamtech works.
Or if I'm not correct about the interaction of steamtech and Samurai, maybe...
Steam Samurai of the Lotus Throne
or maybe...
Steam Samurai: The Bushido of Babbage
My (albeit initial) thoughts... _________________ Clint Black
