would it be possible to fire a sawed off shotgun in close combat? Or is it only pistols that can do so?

"No ranged weapon larger than a pistol" can be used in close combat. That doesn't limit it to just pistols, only weapons no bigger than them.

Up to the GM to make that call, but the sawed-off shotgun weighs 2 lbs. less than the largest pistol in the core book, so I say it falls in the category of weapons usable in close combat.

Of course that also puts the user adjacent to their target using a weapon that hits an adjacent character on a 1 or 2 on the Shooting die if they miss. Twisted Evil
