I never bother looking for castle or monastery plans to buy on DriveThruRPG, there are so many out there from real-life castles that are so easy to adapt for use.
But this one takes the biscuit; Fortress Hohentwiel in south-western Germany, built on an extinct volcano. I need to go and visit this place!
I've made a blog entry "You Really Can't Make This Stuff Up!" if you want to check out the pictures and maps. I've translated the key for non-German speakers' convenience. _________________ Visit Tales from Karickbridge on Obsidian Portal, oh and Savage Legend - The Blog |

Google Image Search can be your friend if you're looking for home floor plans, castles, ship deck plans... whatever!
It's my go-to resource for all sorts of maps and layouts. _________________ 'But I don't want to go among mad people,' Alice remarked.

+1
Even random searches using Google Image Search can turn up amazing things. Same goes of Wikipedia. It's a great source for names too! _________________ Chris (aka GlassJaw) |

The best thing is that what you find doesn't even have to be true to be usable in roleplaying. Some of the best things you can find are those made up by the "tin hat" brigade. Most conspiracy lunacies make perfect stuff for gaming. _________________ Savage Worlds Toybox |

Yeah. They were good at war until sometime during Napoleon's reign. A large part of that was their cunning use of mercenaries. |

I wonder what happened to the crater.

The mountain is effectively the crater. The external 'volcano' bit was eroded during the last glacier period (according to this site). The hard bit left is phonolite or clinker stone, formed from the magma itself. _________________ Visit Tales from Karickbridge on Obsidian Portal, oh and Savage Legend - The Blog |

| Cool stuff! I've been to Lindau on the other side of the Bodensee, but hadn't heard of Hohentwiel before. After reading that link (and following it to other pages), I've just realised that Edinburgh Castle is also built on an extinct volcano. |

Nor had I, and I only live 2 1/2 hours away. I see a daytrip coming up in the not-too-distant future. _________________ Visit Tales from Karickbridge on Obsidian Portal, oh and Savage Legend - The Blog |
