Hey Savage world Smile

So, right off to it, i played 50 fathoms years ago, and bought the book (back in 2004 i think) my problem is its a very long time ago, and i realy want to try and run a game as GM in it but! - is my book from 2004 still useable or would i be wise to by the new one (or is it still the same, just different look?)

AND my biggest question since i was just a player back then, and learned the rules from the GM, What is the name of the core rulebook I need to run the game?

Many thx and hoping for a quick response as im eager to start! Smile

The core rulebook is called Savage Worlds Deluxe Explorer's Edition. That's the most recent version.

But one of the neat things about SW is that it has changed very little overall in the last 10 years or so. The 50 Fathoms book you got in 2004 should still work fine.

One of the changes to look out for is the change in how melee damage work. Your book probably has melee weapons doing a set bonus damage, like Str+2 or Str+3, and so on. The conversion for that is easy, though:

Str+1 = Str+d4
Str+2 = Str+d6
Str+3 = Str+d8
Str+4= Str+d10
Str+5 = Str+d12

The weapon damage is also the minimum Strength required to wield the weapon, so if someone wants to wield a +d8 weapon but has a Str d6 or less, they lose any additional benefits the weapon provides (like Reach and Parry bonuses).

There might be a few other minor things here and there, but there shouldn't be anything game-breaking in using an older version of 50 Fathoms.

One thing to be aware of, the new 50 Fathoms Explorer's Edition is not only updated for the new rules in those few places as mentioned, but it also includes all the material from the 50 Fathoms Companion too. So it's really two books in one for $25.

And it's so much sexier than the old book, with all those color pages to drool on. The updated eye candy alone is worth the price of admission!
