What exactly do you do with them? Do they provide any mechanical effects or are they purely trappings?

As noted in the descriptions of Rich and Filthy Rich, incomes apply if they are appropriate to the setting. If so, how they work will likely be equally dependent on the setting.

In short, expect the characters to do with them what they normally would, pay bills and hope something is left over for emergencies and enjoyment.
