I'm currently GMing a Deadlands Reloaded game with 3 players. We've been playing about 2 months and just last night they hit Seasoned (however, one player took Veteran O' the Weird West, which gives that character an extra 20 xp in exchange for one random major hindrance. So technically, I have 2 seasoned characters and one veteran).

Next session I'll be bringing on 2 new players. I'm wondering if I should start them at Seasoned, Novice, or somewhere in between, maybe 5 or 10 xp. I know it's entirely up to my discretion, I just wanted to know what other GMs have done, or maybe there's an official ruling/suggestion that I may have missed.

YMMV, but as long as the new PCs fill an empty roll, it won't matter. Just make sure they can do something different that the current PCs can't.

That much I know. The new players were knowledgeable enough to ask for a breakdown of the current party to avoid skill redundancy.

that's good. Also, maybe try to go out of your way to have their skills/concepts be the "star of the show"

if one's a woodsy tracker, have an adventure where they need to track down a bad guy in the wilderness.

My group tends to over obsess on balance, so I'd probably give the new guys a bit of an XP bump, maybe 1 xp extra for the first couple of sessions

I'd just bring them in at 15xp, like they were replacing dead characters. Fast, Furious, and Fun.
However, some groups don't like having the new guys come in with as much experience as the veterans; so keep your posse's tastes in mind.

Good luck!

Have these new players played Savage Worlds before?

I try to do this already with the existing characters. Sometimes they do it completely on their own without my planning for it; like the one time I had a big dramatic chase scene planned out, and the posse completely bypassed it with a cunning use of stealth. I was simultaneously disappointed and very impressed.

That's my main concern. On the one hand, I'd like them to start at novice simply to make chargen simpler, and to give them the full novice-to-legendary experience. OTOH, I don't want them to feel like they're lagging behind all the time.

Now here's an interesting idea. Start the new guys at Novice, but give them +1 or x2 (not a typo, this means double xp) per session until they catch up! I like this!

No. But they have played other table-top RPGs before.

The reason I ask is because even if they have played other games, I have always found it best to ease someone into a new system by starting with your basic RAW character so as to not have confusion later or when a new game using that system starts.

Do you have a side game or some other adventures in the same setting you could have them play through?

You can also take the two new player a game one night with just them to get them used to the rules and add some xp and they will game out what there pc's do up to the point they meet the rest of the party

That may not be a good idea only because it could cause an unintentional rift in the group.

This..more or less. I typically do 5 xp less than the lowest player.

if you mean my idea.

It's to game with the new players on a day before they join the main group, so they can learn the rules then every ones game together

I have been in games ware new players or players missing days due to work have a one on one game session with the GM and have make up sessions in real life or over the phone.

Would it work for your group to have them new guys play NPC one shots, just to see how the game mechanics work, and then work on new characters? (Pre-Gens... I know, more work for you but...)

I usually start out new characters at the next lower raise from the lowest in the group, but if their just now hitting seasoned, I don't think it'd make much difference...

WHen we play Savage Worlds and a character dies they create their new character with half the experience of the character that died. SO if a new player joins we have them start with half the experience of the character with the lowest xp. It seems to work out well for us.
