I have a guy that likes to play shaman types, and he'll likely want to follow the old ways. If he goes with the major hindrance that doesn't allow riding on trains and such, then what can I do about getting him involved with the group at the beginning of The Flood?

If he is adamant then 'wing it'. One option would be to have him captured as part of the aggressors in PP1 and then have him honour bound to help, a spirit quest if you will.

Once again, check the "Additions to the second printing" PDF. He can take the Minor version to make his life, and the lives of his fellow players' heroes, a little easier. _________________ Matthew Cutter

And if he wants to be a disruptive jerk then that's a problem.
The Great Maze is no place for an Old Ways (Major) character. The safest and fastest way to travel is by steam boat (and it still isn't very safe).
You're likely to be robbed for your horse - so that someone else can eat it. And that assumes that you can actually take a horse to get wherever you're headed in that fractured and submerged landscape.
Even if the other players are willing to go along with his choice (a minor miracle in itself), that's a massive increase in workload for the Marshal. I know.
If he still insists that the character has to be super-conservative then flat out tell him that that choice will directly lower your own fun. The point of the game is to have fun - so he'll need to alter his choice to either a different character, or a less strict interpretation of the Old Ways oath. Or you can decide to not run a game.
Best of Luck! _________________ "Got a problem? I've got the solution: Rocket Launcher."

Yeah, I know there's a lesser version, Cutter, but thanks for the heads up. I'm just trying to anticipate what might happen once my players sit down to make characters.

If he really wants Old Ways, tell him he has two choices. He can go with the Minor version, or if he really wants the Major version, then he is going to have to take Veteran of the Weird West, so he can start with the Spirits' Favor Edge.
However, since his Hindrance is somewhat limiting character creation to an extent, I'd say if he takes the Major version, he'd get an extra Benny at the beginning of the first session (not every session, just the first one). _________________ Clint Black
