Did anyone come up with a good example of what these edges would be in relation to Deadlands: Reloaded?
I have a player that created a "Black Widow" that is a Huckster with the Whateley bloodline that marries and for some strange reason her new husbands seem to find themselves demised.
The player gave the "Black Widow" the Rich and Filthy Rich Edges and I would like to be fair, but also be as accurate as I can for the time period taking the genre into account as well.

Rich - you have money, a lot of money, that provides regular income. This could be stocks, shares of a gold mine, partial ownership of a railroad, plantation profits, or any other source of recurring wealth.
Filthy Rich - you have a ridiculous amount of money that provides a phenomenal regular income. Larger and more impressive examples of the previous sources.
Also, from the edge (emphasis mine): "Wealthier characters should have a very complete background as well. This needs to be worked out with the GM, and comes with many more assets as well as onerous responsibilities."
So, being Filthy Rich should require more oversight and maintenance. And if they don't keep an eye on their fortune they'll wake up one day to find that it's missing. Earning it back can be a major quest (or completely impossible - in which case the player should probably get a replacement edge, unless they've just been obnoxious; no one ever said Savage Worlds was fair).
Both fit just fine into the Weird West. You'll need to scale back the income (roughly 1/2 the listed value), and understand that money won't be much of a concern for the posse most of the time, but it shouldn't be a problem by itself. And if it is, then you just have lawyers tie up her inheritance for a couple of months. _________________ "Got a problem? I've got the solution: Rocket Launcher."

Lawyers... um, right,.. lawyers...
Didn't these guys pay attention to what's been happening to her husbands?
I wouldn't be found sitting on her funds...

Onerous responsibilities? No-one ever said that has to mean reading reports and filing taxes. If the Agency (or even just common lawmen) find an honest to god Whately whose husbands keep disappearing, they aint just going to turn a blind eye. Paying the right people off, doing favours for the others, making sure no-one says the wrong thing to the wrong person, hell, even making sure the family doesn't decide it's due a cut - that's a full time job.
Up to you, really. I'd certainly enjoy this more than having to deal with management of a trust fund from time to time (and it gives you more interesting NPCs, for sure). But each to their own. |

i like roof top tals idea.
as for the amount of money given deadlands is technically suppose to be 1/2 the base books stats. but considering the pay scale of the rest of the west it might be better to give them 1d6(that canexplode)*$50 a month allowing you to give your character anywhere from the highest paid local official (sheriff $50) to $300 dollers which puts you in the class of the highest paid generals. if they have rich but not filthy rich use the above but with $25 instead of 50. |

My character ended up taking the Noble edge in the game we're playing currently. So rich, but not filthy rich.
What we decided was he was the heir to a banking fortune, and had a comfortable trust fund. The starting money ended up being $750 and the salary is $7,000 a year or $580 a month. So it'll end up being comfortable but not where he'll go around buying everything in the Smith & Robards catalogue that he wants. Which is about what you'd expect from a $250,000 a year income in present day terms.
The responsibilities we decided on are that he'll regularly have to send and receive documents from back east in order to ensure that the fortune is being taken care of and that his family can act with his approval. And every once and a while he'll have to inspect and report back on an investment that's been made in the area where he's traveling. So responsibilities but nothing to onerous. The trick is that he's trying to keep who he is secret and if it ever gets to widely know he runs the risk of being kidnapped for ransom or repeatedly robbed. |
