|

Sorry if this is on the wrong board. I had a couple of questions about plot points and the different setting books available. A group of my friends have decided to give table top rpgs a try and picked this one to start with. I will be game master and am about halfway done with the core rule book. I saw the advertisements for the different books and was wondering exactly what they have that isnt in the core rules. also if there are any pre made campaigns that i could get from the internet that wouldnt require me buying a whole seperate book.My friends wanted to play in a western setting but i dont have the money to buy the deadlands manual right now. Im also still a little confused on what exactly plot points are. I guess im just looking for some clarification on what the different settings books do, how necessary they are, and if there are any easy campaigns i can start with that only need the core rules.

Welcome!
The core rules provide a complete set of rules with which you can play practically anything you want, as long as you're willing to do some prep work.
The settings books sometimes contain some rule expansions, but not usually too much - mostly just setting appropriate character options and the like. Primarily, they detail the setting, provide gear, a bestiary, etc., and then usually a plot point campaign or an adventure generator.

I hope that helps! _________________ "It only takes an extra second to be courteous."

Oh, and don't forget to go here and snag a bunch of cool one sheets (i.e., mini-adventures):

These are a great way to cut your teeth on Savage Worlds.
Enjoy! _________________ "It only takes an extra second to be courteous."

| Welcome to the Savage World forums. If the book you have is Savage Worlds Deluxe, be sure to check out the one sheet adventures in the back of it beginning on page 143. I'd advise running a few of those as well as those on the website that kreider provided the link for. Those will cover different RPG genres from Fantasy -to- Pulp crime and will give you and your group an idea of what they do, and don't, like. |

For a full campaign, you're probably going to need a setting book at some point. A lot of them provide a full campaign, but there's not much like that for the core system. I would suggest playing a few one-shot adventures of different genres to see what your group likes.
For the first few, you might want to use premade characters (and if you ask real nice, I'm sure some folks around here will help you make a few up), then let the players take a crack at their own. Save up a few bucks for a setting book while you play the one-shots (and I don't see anything wrong with the players pitching in), then get something you all liked.
Deadlands is a fantastic setting, but it does not come with a premade campaign, just so you know. It does have two campaigns, The Flood and Last Sons, but they're separate books. I highly recommend 50 Fathoms, which does have a complete campaign. Of course, I don't think these guys have produced a setting that wasn't awesome, so it's mostly a matter of taste. |

I also recommend doing at least 1 or 2 of the one-sheets from the SWD book. Among the links provided above should be the adventure "The Wild Hunt" which I haven't run, but is meant to be a solid introduction to the system, so that might actually be a good start.
It's probably best to do this before you jump into creating your own setting, if that's what you're planning to do. I've been tabletop gaming for 20 years, and I'm running a converted setting for SW. It's been a lot of work for me. If you're brand new to tabletop gaming, then you should definitely run a couple games where someone has done the prep work for you.
By then, with the help of the people here, you will probably have already found some good free resources for a pre-made setting, or at least some substantial building blocks to work with.
Good luck! |

You can get a bunch of free conversions and adventures over here:
savage heroes
also, have a look around the SW wiki. There's some stuff people have put there, and a bunch of info for newbies (no offense meant).

| thanks for the advice everyone. We started with the USS Kaine one shot from the back of the core book and everyone has had a great time so far. we've run 2 sessions on it so far and are doing a 3rd on thursday. Everyone wants to do switch the deadlands setting after this and i was able to get a copy of the older setting book that had the players manual and the gm manual in one. I just hope i can read it before we finish our current game since everyone seems more excited for deadlands. |
