Hey all,

I'm trying to stat out a normal black widow spider for my next adventure, but am struggling to find anything. Can anyone give me any pointers?

Thanks,

Wibbs

If you just want the normal spider, I'd go with something like the following.
Attributes: Agility d10, Smarts d4 (A), Spirit d12, Strength d4, Vigor d6
Skills: Fighting d6 Notice d6
Pace: 8; Parry: 5; Toughness: 1
Special Abilities
Bite: Strength
Poison (-0): Extremely venomous, any victims Shaken or Wounded by a black widow must resist a Venomous poison (see SWD).
Tiny: Size -4. Attacks against the black widow are at -2 due to the tiny size of the arachnid.
Wall Walker: Can move on vertical and horizontal surfaces at it's full pace. Can run while climbing.

Edited for a sane strength. Not sure what I was thinking with that d8. Surprised

Bear in mind that black widow venom, thought pretty powerful for a spider, is not especially dangerous to a healthy human. You'll have a nice big red welt around the area and feel pretty crappy, but you'll survive. Now a bucket full of black widows, dropped on a hero's head, that might cause some problems.

Despite their reputation and their terrifying appearance (I feel that black widows are one of the better arguments in favor of Intelligent Design. I mean, they have a logo!), them suckers are mostly dangerous to babies and the very old. I still smash them with gust every chance I get, of course. Can't be sure that they're not spies for the Spider-Queen Lolth.

In which case you either a) didn't get Shaken / Wounded (and therefore didn't get poisoned) or b) made your Vigor roll versus poison (1 wound and Exhaustion, or just Exhaustion with a Raise).
Of course, if the 50% fatality rate for a standard adult human that I've presented is too high for your group's suspension of disbelief, just downgrade the venom some. Either a bonus on the resistance roll (probably a +2 if only those with a d4 Vigor are likely to fail) or downgrade the poison to Paralysis (though that can't kill you, which isn't the case for black widow venom).
Based upon my research, Venomous is the most appropriate of the standard poisons. The -0 was to make it a threat without making it too much more dangerous than it really is. But if you want realism then, as GF indicated, the venom needs to be toned down a bit; hence giving them a bonus to the Vigor roll to resist.

Unless there was a swarm or something, I'd probably just skip the stats and give the player a notice or agility roll to avoid getting surprised and bitten by one. I'd let a player squish a single spider without any rolls, so long as they weren't using their bare hands.

If bitten though, the Venomous poison thing would work just fine.
