So having had a bit of an insight into a problem i've been working on re: adapting cyberpunk-style reflex boosts into Savage more pleasingly than just renaming Level-Headed without making a boosted character into an unbalanced screaming god of death, i am thinking that a new Edge might be appropriate, and possibly appropriate for other games as well:
Combat Edge: Boosted or Improved Boosted
Requirements: Novice, Agility D8, (Veteran, Boosted)
Your hero is considerably faster on the trigger than most folks, and tends to be a lot smoother when he gives a few quick pulls too. Your penalty for Rapid Attacks (ranged or melee) is reduced to -3 (-2), and you receive a +2(+4) bonus to rolls to interrupt someone else or beat another character's interrupt attempt.
We assume, for our purposes, that the Deadlands hip-shooting edges are not available or would only apply to a single action in any case. Addtionally, this would usually come with Level-Headed/Imp. Level-Headed as a cyberware package deal (using Super Edge from SPC for my build system).
So, two questions:
1) Overall, does this seem reasonable? I think it grants a good edge to a character for multiple attacks but doesn't obsolete, say, Frenzy, since you have all the rapid attack disadvantages (-2 Parry, etc.). It's sort of a way to get a bit of Hip-Shooting and a bit of Frenzy in one Edge, plus the unique bonus to interrupts, which makes total sense for a reflex-boosting Edge. As far as I know, no other Edge does that. In terms of requirements, those seem appropriate.
2) Should the +2 to interrupts be its own Edge? As I said, it's to my knowledge a unique ability and I could see the rapid attack bonus being potent enough to be an Edge on its own. While I do not think that the interrupt bonus is itself enough to justify an Edge, perhaps something like
Combat Edge: Reflexes (Improved Reflexes)
Requirements: Novice, Agility D8 (Veteran, Reflexes)
Your character is very quick to respond to threats, and won't get beaten to the draw by most foes. You receive a +2(+4) bonus to interrupt or beat another character's interrupt attempt on hold, as well as to Agility rolls requiring quick reaction times (dodging an area effect attack, throwing back a grenade, stepping back from a pit trap, etc.)
I could see some abuse potential in the second portion (maybe just +1 or +2 to those rolls?), but if two Edges overall are more balanced, I would be ok with that. Any thoughts? |
