Hello all,
One of my central NPCs is, secretly, harrowed. I had all of these grand plans for how my players were going to figure out that he is undead, and what it truly means to to be harrowed. It was going to be great.
Then I realized that the "Damned" legendary edge, which is smack in the middle of player material, pretty much spills the beans when it comes to the fact that harrowed exist and are undead. Ok, fine, not the end of the world. But then I gave my players the S&R Catalog, and they read the entry for the Soul Sight Camera and were informed that when using the camera, they would SEE THE MANITOU POSSESSING THE HARROWED. Again, this is in player material!
Needless to say I'm disappointed. I've decided to scrap the storyline centering around this character being harrowed, because now that my players know that harrowed = come back to life possessed by manitou, it's just no longer an interesting reveal.
Why were these spoilers included in player material? |

The ones you're talking about, to my knowledge, are pretty minor spoilers, really. I mean, they basically amount to saying that "undead exist". Well, yeah--that pretty much goes with the setting. Half of the art, and even the cover to the Marshal's Handbook have undead on them.
Neither the Damned edge nor the Soul Sight Camera give any indication on how undeath works, really, nor do they give any insight into how Harrowed interact with the world around them.
If its me--don't scrap your plot. Do your players actually Have a SS Camera? Have they used it on this PC? If they have, work with it. Let them try some grand scheme to exorcise or remove the manitou. Let the little beastie run wild. Use their exploration to your advantage, rather than as a detriment.
Just because they might have Some knowledge, that doesn't mean they have the whole picture. _________________ Victory! Now the real work begins! http://kck.st/V8ecTS |

He's an NPC, and the characters don't know he's Harrowed yet, right? There's nothing stopping you from running the "PCs find out a friend is a walking, possessed corpse" angle and milking it for all the drama you can.
Also, keep in mind that player knowledge isn't character knowledge. Knowing that occasionally people come back from the dead possessed by malevolent spirits is different than knowing that it actually has happened in this one particular case. I think you're panicking over nothing. _________________ When the Cat's a Stray, the Mice will Pray |

Um, the actual rules for playing a Harrowed are in the Player's Guide, so not exactly a "spoiler" there. Yeah, they're in the No Man's Land, but any player with an Arcane Background has access to more knowledge about everything in No Man's Land than we're talking about here. Heck, Agents, Texas Rangers, and even characters with Veteran of the Weird West all have access to that information.
I'm sorry there was a big reveal planned around it, and that it doesn't feel like it would still work out, but the book doesn't work off the premise that none of the players would know about the Harrowed. It's expected that at least one player (if not more honestly) will fall in one of those 8 options.
Running a game where the posse isn't aware of the arcane at all or where the Marshal changes things so those archetypes don't have access to the knowledge the game expects them to have is going to be the exception by definition.
Again, sorry you feel you lost an opportunity, but hopefully, it's still possible to figure out a way to have the "reveal" just perhaps a different one. _________________ Clint Black
