I just finished up an arc where we were playing SW World of Warcraft. At the end of the game the group had to swim down to a "Well of Power" to complete a prophecy. I used a multi-tier rig that I'd put together previously for a session where the group was falling down an energy shaft (Star Wars), and used this for swimming down (only got picture after everything was moved off setup ):
Then the group got to take on the "aspect" of the four dragons (sort of like elder gods in WoW) and fight the fifth aspect Deathwing which was rampaging across the world causing destruction. For that I made globe and used dragon figures (meant for a charm bracelet) dyed different colors. I was really pleased with how that came out:
That part went especially well and I was happy with how the battle came out (making the globe was a pain, cutting and pinning a flat map to a spherical globe)
That is not a criticism in the least. The best games run on high-octane plagiarism, in my opinion. And your setup is lookin' really nice. I hope you guys had fun!
I did an asteroid field battle taken directly from Penny Arcade for my old Star Wars game (may have to use that one again). It worked out really well because I'd taken Styrofoam spheres, painted them gray and then added spacing on them. I mounted them on dowels and put them over a regular 1" grid map. The group threw a curve in when they chucked a power droid at the floating troopers (who were taking cover behind a big asteroid) and then blew the droid. But since I'd left the asteroids free-floating I was able to just scatter them all away from the blast. It was a good game.
