For the conventions that we go to, we wanted some fun games to play and after a night fueled by sleep deprivation and over caffeination, we came up with the idea of spaghetti Westerns using unorthodox characters. Specifically: The Muppets.

That's right...the lovable characters from The Muppet Show and Sesame Street in a no-holds barred, down and dirty, gritty pulp Western.

Taking the place of Clint Eastwood in his iconic "Man with No Name" role was not one, but six Muppets. Grover who was a dual-pistol wielding, slip-shooting machine; Ernie who was a dirty, scarred up knife-fighter; Burt who was following Ernie, keeping his life-mate out of trouble with his Henry Rifle; Animal, a feral fighter a deserter from the US Army that had information that his former unit (Dr. Teeth, Zoot, Sgt. Floyd Pepper, and Janice) were carrying a chest of gold; Beeker who had been blown up one too many times by Dr. Munson and had almost developed an addiction to explosives, and Oscar the Grouch, still carrying his can as well as a Sawed-off Shotgun.

They were up against Elmo, the leader of the Rojo Gang; Sweetums, his lead enforcer; The Swedish Chef, their torturer; and a handful of Muppet Extras.

I ended up running the game twice, back-to-back and I probably could have run it another three times with all the interest in it. Neither group took quite the same approach; but both times were just INSANE with explosions, gunfire, and the soft rain of shredded foam that fell like snow on the South Western Texas town of El Rey.

This sounds like it was a ton of fun... do you happen to have that adventure available to peruse?

The town of El Rey has a problem. Two rival groups are fighting each other, trying to gain control of the town. One side of the street has the Rojo gang, the other is the sheriff and the mayor and a few deputies. The PCs arrive, looking for shelter from the punishing desert, with news that a small army detail is on the way to Mexico with a chest full of money.

After being in town for a little bit, the PCs learn that the Rojo gang has kidnapped the Mayor’s wife and is holding her ransom. They have stopped intervening directly with the Rojo gang but they quietly tell them that they will pay once Rojo and his boys are taken care of.

The gang hangs out in an old hotel in El Rey. The town’s folk are pretty well holed up in El Rey while the Rojo gang robs them blind and terrorizes them daily.

PCs
These PCs are built using a combination of the SWEX, the (possibly never-to-be-released) Puppets Compendium, and the (soon-to-be-released) Spaghetti Western Compendium, the latter two from Silver Gryphon Games.

Animal
The wildest and most unpredictable of all the Muppets in the group, Animal is a former drummer for the Army. He was actually attached to Col. Teeth and Sgt. Floyd Pepper. He is addicted to women (whether they want him or not) and he is a furious fighter, often tearing his opponents limb-from-limb.

• Big Teeth: Str + d6 Teeth damage
• Furry Fury: Flies into a Berserk Rage at least provocation, -2 Charisma
• Ambidextrous
• Two Fisted
• Frenzy
• Improved Frenzy

Grover
Grover makes up for his lack of backbone with his shoot first, second, third, and fourth attitude. He has long since gotten over some of his phobias simply by the application of patience, mental control, and lead. This has left him jaded with a tough-as-nails outlook.

Attributes: Strength d6, Agility d10, Smarts d4, Spirit d6, Vigor d6

Pace: 7, Parry: 6, Toughness: 5, Charisma: 0

• Clueless
• Heroic
• 2 Starr .44’s (Double Action, 2d6+1 AP 1, 10/20/40, 6 shots)

Ernie
The years away from Sesame Street have not been kind to Ernie. Gambling, prostitutes, and fights have left him scarred and he has learned that in the saloons, sometimes it’s kill or be killed. Never visibly armed, he always has knives packed around his body and he mainly fights with a huge cleaver of a bowie knife; the knife is almost as well known as he is. “Bird Gutter” is the knife that got Ernie kicked off Sesame Street when he tried to return to sober up and return to a normal life after years of being on the lam and in the bottle.

• Delusion (Major) – Rubber Ducky is the voice of God
• Knives (d6 + d4, 3/6/12)
• Bird Gutter – Trademark Knife (d6 + d6 + 1, 3/6/12)

Bert
Bert has had a hard time staying with Ernie in his time of need, but he has maintained the friendship even through the darkest of times. When Ernie is off on a bender, Bert has learned to sharpen his sharp-shooting skills and has learned to pass time with his pidgins while nursing his friend back to health or getting him out of whatever trouble he’s gotten himself into.

• Level Headed (Draw two initiative cards, keep best)
• Marksman (+2 to Shooting)
• Henry Rifle (2d6, AP1, 11/22/44, Double Tap)

Oscar
Oscar is just as curmudgeonly as ever, and he didn’t leave his can when he left Sesame Street. He carries it with him where ever he goes, and always walks, making everyone else wait for him. His plethora of junk inside his can never fails to astound those around him; neither does his double barrel sawed off.

Attributes: Strength d6, Agility d6, Smarts d6, Spirit d8, Vigor d10

• Marksman
• QuickDraw
• No Mercy
• Luck (+1 Benny)
• Great Luck (+1 Benny)
• Mean
• Stubborn
• Quirk – Oscar is a jerk, even to his friends
• Sawed-off Shotgun, double barrel (5/10/20, 3d6 – 1, buckshot)

Beeker
Sadly, Dr. Munson has long since blown himself up. Staying with his friends from Sesame Street, Beeker has turned just as mercenary as they have. His years of working with Dr. Munson have lead him to know his way around explosions better than a miner. He’s gone slightly insane over the years, and he secretly wonders if he’s just some kind of pawn put on the world to see what a Puppet can actually survive.

Attributes: Strength d6, Agility d6, Smarts d8, Spirit d8, Vigor d12

• Iron Jaw (+2 to Soak rolls)
• Tough as Nails (+1 to Toughness)

• Harder to Kill (Ignore death effects on incapacitation table)
• Dynamite (2d6 / stick, Medium Blast Template, 5/10/20, +1” per stick, +1 damage per stick) – Inexhaustible supply

NPCs
The major NPCs are listed below. I did not stat out Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem (or Col. Teeth, Sgt Floyd Pepper, Private Zoot, and Private Janice as the case may be) because I did not anticipate them actually having a chance to enter combat.

Elmo
Elmo was ostracized from Sesame Street and he went crazy in a bad way. After coming back, he couldn’t justify trying to go back. So he set up the Rojo gang and has been terrorizing every since.

Attributes: Strength d6, Agility d10, Smarts d4, Spirit d6, Vigor d6

Town’s folk
Kermit (Mayor), Piggy (kidnapped Mayor’s wife), Sam (sheriff), Rawlf (piano player), Statler and Waldorf (bartender, town drunk), Gonzo (bar owner, pimp), Chickens (women, waitresses), Rizzo (town rat)

Army
Dr. Teeth (WC), Zoot, Janice, Sgt. Floyd Pepper (WC)

The Setup
PCs ride into town, instantly see a red Muppet with a long rifle shooting wildly into the street and hollering, swilling back on a bottle of whisky. He gets out of site before anyone can do anything about it, but not before the mystery Muppet shoots the hats off someone heading to the bar. If they go into a building, the townsfolk eye them suspiciously and hopefully. They are ridiculed by Statler and Waldorf for a rib or two and then they are approached by Sam.

Sam informs them that there aren’t weapons allowed in town, the Rojo gang sees fit to disarm everyone. If they want to keep their guns, they better keep their heads down. He informs them that the Rojo gang is lead by Elmo, and he was the Muppet they saw shooting the hat off poor Waldorf. Statler adds “Too bad he aimed high!” Waldorf follows up with “Maybe you should do the same with your jokes!” and they both start laughing.

When the PCs get up to go, the mayor come around and stops them, saying that if the PCs try to stop the Rojo gang, they can be paid handsomely. But they can’t get paid until after the gang has been taken care of.

Meanwhile, the PCs are in town to get a chest full of gold dollars from the US Army transporting it to Mexico. The chest is for some kind of pay off, but details turn to rumors and wild accusations with that kind of money involved. It just so happens that the army unit transporting it is down a man, their fifth member is Animal, one of the PCs. After scouting locations, they figured that just south of El Rey would be the best place to hijack the shipment; there’s a cemetery just off the road, up on a high ridge. The edge of the road is either cemetery or cliff that drops hundreds of feet.

Once the army is taken care of, the PCs turn and see a large column of smoke rising from El Rey. Hopefully they do the heroic thing and go back to town. It’s nightfall when they arrive, and the mayor’s house has been torched. They mayor, himself badly burned, explains that the Rojo gang came in and kidnapped his wife and are holding her in their strong hold. He will give them each 1000 dollars to get his wife back and take care of the Rojo gang. He’d give more but that’s all he has. Gonzo adds that they have several of his chickens that they have kidnapped, he’ll give you each another 1000 for rescuing his girls.

Then there’s the fight at the old hotel. Piggy is in the top floor, the chickens are in the bottom. Piggy is being guarded by Sweetums while the Swedish Chef is beating on the chickens while a large stew pot boils ominously.

I have nothing of substance to contribute, but I want you to know how bad I want to play this.

Is it sad that I really want to see a Puppers Compendium? I can see myself picking that up as soon as it came out.

It's being set up to look at all kinds of puppets, not just the Muppets. Though, to be honest, it was originally conceived to run Muppet adventures.

The follow up for this last one will be For a Few Muppets More, and I'm going to switch the cast around a bit...and that is giving me more ideas for what I would need to build them....

I was going to say something about the forum rules on converting material under copyright... but I don't know that anyone would admit the connection. Surprised

Both the players that had Ernie played that to the hilt, too. It was amazing. We were laughing so hard our sides hurt.

Imagine Cookie Monster, his paper-thin whisper backed by the strength of a tiger, waving a .44 Magnum, asking the bakery clerk if they feel lucky.

Dirty Hairy. Oh yes. It will be done.

Mahna Mahna.

Ya know, when I first read that, it was past my bedtime, and I'd had one too many. I thought you guys were planning an intervention on my behalf.

Then I saw Sesame Street and the bit about...

Also, I think...

--Miss Piggy should be re-cast as the Madame of the local House of Ill Repute
--Count Von Count needs to be the town undertaker. "ONE dead deputy... TWO dead deputies... HaHaHa..."
--Gonzo as the loco prospector, with bundles of dynamite and chicken feathers everywhere.
--Kermit as the Sheriff.
--Sam as the Mayor.

And, just for the record, Bert and I are just good friends... Wink

Aww, hell... You guys got me on a roll... Cool

Fozzie can be the running joke in this scenario. Have him be the...

-- Train conductor/Ticket puncher
-- Train engineer
-- Banker
-- Blacksmith
-- Telegraph operator
-- Bartender
-- Carpenter
-- Dentist
-- Town Reporter
-- Saloon Vaudeville Comedy Act ("Wokka Wokka" Mr. Green )
-- Store Keeper
-- etc...

You get the idea. Let Fozzie fill the role of Extra. The "Bear Who Wears Many Hats".

He's everywhere, yet it's the same guy. Very Happy

That's not true.

I can quit anytime I want.

But I will be back tomorrow with my thoughts on Dr. Bunsen Honeydew as the local Barber/Doctor/Mad Scientist.

No, just make that Mad Scientist.

Fozzie will be the Barber and Doctor.

Wait... the Swedish Chef can be the Barber/Doctor/Surgeon/Chicken Rustler...

Dammit. #1eek13

I'm sorry, you started talking and I kept picturing the Swedish Chef as Sweeney Todd.

What was that you were saying?
