So when you game, what to you most often use for music (and if you don't, you really ought to!) to help set the mood and keep the pace moving. A lot of these can be tied heavily to genre, but if there's one thing I learned from Grand Theft Auto III....there's nothing better for car chases than listening to Opera and classical.
So what do you usually put on to keep the mood going? _________________ Kevin Rohan, Content Director

My group had just rescued one of their members when I said that time seemed to have stopped, they saw dust motes tumble through the air, turned slowly round to find an demi-god shaman and his very large hobgoblin tribe arrayed behind them.
And I played this loud (I have good speakers).
Jaws dropped. Music makes it better.
entering a miraculous place
deep grief
chase in a pulp setting
etherial
stopping now... _________________ Biting! It's like kissing but there's a winner!

We're getting to be huge fans of services like Grooveshark....huge online library, totally free and legal, and you can make playlists. We have several set up for whatever type of game we're running.
Ennio Morricone makes an appearance on every list. _________________ Kevin Rohan, Content Director

Man, it's so hard to choose just one... It really does depend on the genre and the mood you wanna convey for a particular scene.
But I know you can't win with an All of the Above option in your poll.
For my overall choice, I like instrumentals, orchestra pieces, movie soundtracks, and music ripped from video games.
Don't forget sound effects and ambient sounds. You know, that New Age, Hippy stuff to help you relax . Sounds of the rainforest, native drums, birds cawing, water lapping... It can help to set the mood, without being in-your-face.
Anyway, when I find the right group of fearless, red-blooded, intrepid compatriots, with a love of thunder, taste for mystery, and a thirst for adventure (that is, players for my Pulp game)...
This will be our theme song. Force 10 from Navarone _________________ I've often speculated why you don't return to America. Did you abscond with the church funds? Run off with a senator's wife? I like to think you killed a man. It's the Romantic in me. |

Hedningarna Finnish/Swedish Folk/Rock/Gypsy music ... I have 4 of their albums in one big playlist I play at every game. _________________ Dean: "Ya' know she could be faking."

| I've largely only used music in fantasy games, and it has mainly been progressive rock in the vein of Jethro Tull, Gryphon, Gentle Giant, Mike Oldfield and Renaissance. Celtic band Clannad was definitely used and abused in some games, too. |

While we are talking music... I am kinda classical. What would you guys play behind a Necessary Evil game?
@Rohan I am now on Grooveshark, thanks, very cool. For your Fantasy setting playlist _________________ Biting! It's like kissing but there's a winner!

for me it usually depends on the game. I like any of the John Williams sound tracks for Star Wars, for fantasy I love Conan sound tracks or any flavor of the Lord of the Rings.
For modern day I usually play a variety of modern music. Shadowrun I use a lot of techno. |

| Force 10 from Navarone!! As a young Star Wars fan, I was naturally drawn to that film(Harrison Ford). Also, The Big Red One(Lee Marvin and Mark Hamil). Not to mention the fact that my friends and I were also a bunch of military dorks. Taps anyone? Saw it at the theater. I think we all fought over who was going to pretend to be T. Cruise's character, or Timothy Hutton's Major Mallory(?). Ah, fifth grade memories...Sorry. Thread derail. |

It really depends on what I'm playing.
For Fantasy games, I've got the soundtracks from Diabolo, Guild Wars and WoW.
For Deadlands, I've got Wierd Wailin's, Aces and Eights and the soundtrack to the Outlaws computer game. Copeland's Ballet Rodeo also turns up.
50 Fathoms gets a lot of Pirates of the Carribean played
I've been using several different movie soundtracks for Rippers.
Shadowrun gets Techno, Industrial and Jazz (mostly west coast cool, and a lot of GRP stuff) depending on where the runners are at. _________________ Currently Playing:

I suppose I should have had Big Band added in there for 20's - 50's and even into the 60's.
We've been playtesting a new book for my other system and I think tonight we'll have some of the slower stuff from the Cowboy Bebop OST's and some big band...maybe some Max Raabe for a little taste of modern, flavored heavily with 30's big band and swing... _________________ Kevin Rohan, Content Director

right now I'm using L.A.I.R. OST for Evernight game.

When I was running Deadlands: Ennio Morricone (For a Fistfull of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More and The Good, The Bad and The Ugly), "Ghost Riders in the Sky" from Ghost Rider OST, and something from Starcraft 2.
Necessary Evil...well...I didn't found anything I like it
and some time ago, I was looking for some music from the 1930's. I want to run Ravaged Earth in the future (Sky Captain OST, LANoire OST) . |

For a edgy '50s-'60s setting in North America I'd totally play my Rev. Horton Heat collection. Kickass Rockabillie! _________________ Dean: "Ya' know she could be faking."

Answering my own question....
for NE:
the Dark Knight Soundrack, especially "why so serious" kind of grim, but so cool.
for any post-apocalypse game:

| I got that Soundtrack, but for NE I need something with more "action" and not so dark and grim... |

There are tons of good movie and video game soundtracks.
For my Fantasy soundtrack, LOTR, Conan, King Arthur, Last of the Mohicans, Gladiator, Harry Potter, Hero, House of Flying Daggers, Last Samurai, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Bram Stokers Dracula, Master & Commander, Pirates of the Caribbean, Troy, Willow, WOW (players always chuckle when these come up), Age of Empires, Blackhawk Down, CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN DRAGON, Diablo 2, Sleepy Hollow, Raiders of the Lost Ark... phew...
I have 6 playlists, Combat, Creepy, Explore, Travel, Wonder, Outdoors. You have to pick through the songs to find the appropriate song for the mood you are trying to create.
For SciFi, I use MP3's from Eve Online (they give them away on their website). Might be nice for Cyberpunk too.
A group called Midnight Syndicate also put out some nice themed albums. Great atmosphere music. |

For Rippers, I use a mixture of late 19th century music (a lot of Strauss, some G&S), and some Dark Ambient-tracks recommended to me by a friend who's... slightly strange.
For Deadlands the soundtrack from Firefly works surprisingly well.
For fantasy my choices vary, but tend towards a mixture of orchestral tracks and early music. _________________ No! "Knowledge: When It's Time To Leg It!" is not a legitimate skill choice! |
