Thanks to everyone who helped us break 1500 (and then 1600!)

We'll be announcing a new stretch goal this week

Until then -- Here's a fiction snippet by Sean Nokes from the introduction to Kaiser's Gate.

>>>><<<<
July 28, 1915

The winter wind howled through the shattered gates of Fort Douamont. I stood in the courtyard, eyeing the still-warm bodies of the French defenders. The enemy hadn’t expected the Kaiser to send in one of his best sorcerers to sap the walls, and it had cost them. Occasional pops of gunfire echoed over the frozen bricks as my men hunted the last French soldiers through the inner defenses of the fort.

I was drawn to the commotion immediately when Sergeant Kunze’s squad emerged from the main bunker with a gibbering civilian in tow. They dragged the greasy, cackling wretch by his elbows and threw him down at my feet. He spat blood and giggled, seeming oblivious to the corpses heaped nearby.

“Sergeant, what is the meaning of this? Our orders were to take no prisoners.”

The rest of his squad had taken a prudent step back, leaving him to face me. The sergeant stammered, “This one has no uniform or weapon, Captain. We thought he might be a spy. That he might have some useful information. Although he looks a bit mad.”

The Frenchman was still giggling and mumbling to himself at my feet, and I delivered a savage kick to shut him up, bowling him onto a dead French officer. He looked up at me, and began mouthing strange words – definitely not French – and caressing the bodies he laid upon. A magician’s trick?

“You idiot!” I fumed, fumbling for my pistol and emptying it into the French sorcerer’s chest. With a last gasping word, he slumped back, a glassy grin freezing onto his face. Cold wind rushed in to fill the silence.

“That was no spy, Sergeant.”

“What do you mean, Captain?” Kunze said, blinking in bafflement.

“Find our sorcerer! Now!” I shrieked, fumbling to reload my pistol with half-frozen fingers. I followed Kunze’s squad toward the main bunker, but it was already too late. All over the courtyard, the fallen of Fort Douaumont staggered to their feet, eerie blue flames dancing in their eyes. Even our own fallen men – good subjects of the Kaiser – rose to clutch at us. Two of Kunze’s infantrymen were dragged down by the weight of the ghoulish horde, and the rest of us fled, spraying bullets. “Get to the bunker!” I shouted.

We scrambled into the bunker, reloading our weapons and shouting the alarm. We could hear the sounds of renewed fighting deeper inside, the gunshots and screaming. “Schwartzmann! Get the flamethrower! Get it ready!” Kunze bawled.

As we slammed the outer door of the bunker against the first onrushing undead, I could hear the Frenchman’s laughter slicing through the cold.

--Hauptmann Hermann Ehrhardt of the Reichsheer (Imperial German Army), in his memoir 'Fighting the Shadows'.

This is way more groundswell for this project than we ever anticipated and we're very grateful for everyone's backing and enthusiasm.

hey - nice to see forums back up!

We just broke 3500 this morning -- that means the short short anthology has been greenlit (we're lining up authors now)

If we hit $4000 we will do the set of figure/vehicle/monster flats that forumites had previously suggested.

(Artist Rick Hershey has agreed to produce them.)

13 days left!

The release date on the kickstarter page says June, thats the date we hope to have the PDF ready and as quickly as possible after that we will have the print version out to those backers that requested one.

Cool review. I'm running an early 1920's campaign and there's a ton of real life stuff to draw from for interesting story elements in that era. Aliester Crowley and the Hermitic Order of the Golden Dawn, the Mata Hari, Teddy Rosevelt, Irish revolution, the rise of soviet Russia, etc etc.

If you can find it I'd recommend watching http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0103586/. The show wanders around the world a lot showing off different people and events during that time. It gives you a very good feel of things.

and we're now past $4k - so everyone will get a copy of the Kaiser's Gate Figure Flats (by Rick Hersey).

So - if you've been waiting to back the Kickstarter - that's a nice add-on right there to sweeten the pot.

Only 6 days left in the Kickstarter though ...

on the latest episode of the BAMF Podcast (hosted by yours truly) - we have the whole Kaiser's Gate team on board to talk about the project.

We highlight some of the magic rules in the Savage Worlds conversions and talk about the additional cool stuff that the reach goals on the Kickstarter have made possible

I have a question about the bonus goals. The $3500 one says we get out choice of formats for the anthology

but the $2000 goal for the map, I backer's get the map as well? I mean the goals aren't just things you are going to make to sell, but things you are going to make to sell, and give to your backers?

I'll defer to the publisher - but -

Yeah - That is my understanding, yes.

From Mike's introductory information in Kaiser's Gate:

Quote:
The graphic novel Arrowsmith (by Kurt Busiek and Carlos Pacheco) and the movie Flyboys were the primary inspirations for Soldiers and Spellfighters. If you enjoy this setting, chances are you’d probably like those too.

I am polishing the final draft this weekend and creating characters for the adventures. Good fun.
