I'm working on a little card based generator for Sandbox rpg settings. Basically players/GM draw cards to add a tabled "object" to the setting. I was going by Suit-based categories, but I cna only come up with three - Events, Extras (NPC's) and Locations... Really feel like a fourth is needed to add variety... any ideas? _________________ No longer a luddite... I have a blog... - Magic, Magic Items, and Technology seems like a decent 4th category. You could call it "Things" and then the categories would be People, Places, Things, and Events which has a nice ring to it.
- Monsters, Races, Cultures, Organizations - could be part of "NPCs" category but could be their own category instead.
- Twists - The 4th category could just be weird miscellaneous things that affect the game in interesting ways without being a Person, Place, or Event.
I hope you will share when you are done!

Threats, not so much, as the idea is the player/GM can decide their use for the "object" ... having it serve as an ally, antagonist or both... _________________ No longer a luddite... Random didn't mean sandbox last I checked. So not really sure what you're trying to accomplish.
That said, if you're looking for classes of random things to add to a game, here are a few more ideas:
- Terrain
- Weather / Environment
- Geographical Disaster
- Political Event |

Well, I wouldn't call it "true" random or "true" sandbox... but some whacky hybrid of the two... Maybe "Playpen" is a better word; a numer of "toys" for creating an area of rpg geography/history. Basically, there are a number of random "broad" objects- Location, Extra, Event, Faction - with more finite elements (i.e. the political event and disaster fall under the more generic category of "event"). Basically, the gm/player rolls a number of times and generates the setting under a broader "genre" heading. Still nutting out/testing the specifics of how best to do that. At the moment I'm using cards and thinking each player does a 5 card draw, creating objects their character has had a "personal" background encounter with. These are then gathered up by the GM and shuffled, dealt back out into 1 pile of 5 cards per player, creating blocks... so you get things like the "gangsters (extra), at the nightclub (location) wehre the shootout happened (event)". _________________ No longer a luddite... You might want to consider plot-twist if it isn't already covered under your "Events" draw. As well, for an excellent example of a card based adventure generator, I strongly recommend purchasing the Beasts and Barbarians PDF. That contains the best deck of cards based adventure generator I've ever seen. I can see that generator being adapted for many different settings. |
