If you are using the "No Power Points" setting rule, and a player rolls a 1 on his casting die, does this:

supercede this:

Failure: All currently maintained powers are cancelled and the caster is Shaken.
That is, does a roll of 1 mean you are automatically shaken for failing the roll, and then roll 2d6 damage to see if you are wounded further? I expect the penalties from from this setting rule to be a bit harsh, but I'm not sure how harsh it should be.

Two different triggers. Rolling a 1 on the Arcane skill die does not automatically mean the character also failed the roll since the Wild Die could still succeed. And the automatic failure of the power from rolling a 1 is not the same as failing the actual roll.
So if the caster rolls a 1 on their Arcane skill die and succeeds on the Wild Die, they just suffer the effects of Backlash, but if the Wild Die is a failure as well, then they suffer the effect of a Failure on the roll as well.
Hope that clarifies. _________________ Clint Black
