Hi folks

In my flood campaign, I placed the first glyph they ever found, long before they knew what to make of it, in the train tunnel (to be more precise, in the exact location where their overground train partially crashed down into the underground rail tunnel of the Hellbore) where they first met Hellstromme...

Now it's their second to last glyph (they don't have a clue yet that the final one is in Mexicali), so they'll soon go for it this week.
In the initial event at that location, I placed some black hooded figure in the midst of the Indians that were watching the helpless train... One of our posse even got a kind of supernatural connection to him and felt that he's "special"... (being one incarnation of Raven in the Apache region)

Since Raven caused the Great Quake, he'll SURELY know what they're up to activating the glyphs, he must have sensed that glyphs are being activated again (at least in my campaign, he does)...
So one way or the other, they'll have to cross him to activate this glyph, or so I thought. And now, as mentioned in an earlier thread, why shouldn't Raven be "happy" about a chance to kick Grimme out of the saddle, we've seen plenty of struggles between Servitors earlier...

One last detail to it - I thought why not use this chance to walk the Hunting Grounds? We've been playing for years, but never did that... And Raven should have PERFECT powers to allow that. I think he'll even be able to SHAPE what they'll see and meet in the Hunting Grounds, so that every scene they walk through there, is a kind of parable or metaphore to what Raven wants them to understand...
(for those who know it, very much like the feel of the King Arthur tales of Sir Thomas Mallory or in the Pendragon RPG, just deadlandish)
Of course, there'll be threats and dark mood aplenty... And in the end, it would lead surprisingly to Raven "allowing" them to reach the glyph, i.e. letting them out of his corner of the Hunting Grounds again, giving them a crazy warning on the way, but making clear he's not there to protect Grimme...
Arrow

What do you think? Too strange? Not fitting? And most importantly, IF you like the basic idea, any ideas of such "scenes" in the Hunting Grounds that would make great metaphoric value or at least be strange enough to let my posse wonder for more than the (not usual but sometimes too frequent) "shrug, can we shoot it?"
#Evil Bat

Again, thanks for any help, yours faithfully, Marshal G

P.S.: Yes, I plan to play the Last Sons campaign right after the Flood, so any link/foreshadowing or hook would be great, too (I just haven't read it yet).

This sounds like a pretty interesting idea. Big thing is that if they encounter Raven, they'll need to have some means of surviving. One possibility for it is to have a "ghost battle" (like the one in The Last Sons Plot Point 4) reenacting the Old Ones being slaughtered by the Last Sons. That is, if you want your posse going to make some major Guts checks!

As for Raven knowing about triggering the flood, he'd probably be okay with that because it'll drive the rail barons inland towards the Black Hills for Rail War Two in The Last Sons. This could lead to an interesting setup in The Hunting Grounds where they meet Raven, probably as The Hooded One, and he encourages them to make the flood happen. Especially if they don't find out who he is until much later, this could be a very interesting form of foreshadowing.

Is this the same Raven who works at the Raptor rescue center outside of town and sells eagle feathers and pot

Hey thanks for the answers (no idea which Raven you mean, VonDan Wink).

Regarding Raven encouraging them to raise the Flood, I'm not su sure about it anymore since I read about Hasteli's Children in The Flood, where it's mentioned that he sets Hasteli on their track to prevent them from following their plan... So the "can he know" IS already answered, and the "would he mind" seems also clear...

So now I've changed my mind and rather aim at playing out this impersonation of Raven as a torn, schizophrenic character (which he somehow is, being hundreds of years old, and acting in so many peronas)...

Maybe the final scene could, on top of gruesome horror and guts checks, have the posse see the friendly part of Raven win over the revengeful part, and then letting them off the hook...?
(it's not at all clear in my mind yet, so still any recollections of other posse's adventures out in the hunting grounds are much appreciated).

If the posse pulls of the Flood then the Reckoners will suffer a setback - specifically Famine will.

That's unfortunate for Raven's employers, but actually works out pretty well for him. Grimme is starting to impact Raven's own schemes, the disaster will kill a ton of white folks (always a good thing, from Raven's perspective), the change in power structures in the Maze (and all the confusion) should make it easier to start and maintain wars throughout the disputed territories, and it's not like Raven liked California anyway.
He's supposed to try and stop it, hence the use of some of his loyal lieutenants to mess with the posse, but Raven won't be upset if the Flood occurs. His bosses will mind, but Raven's already done everything he can to ensure his own immortality and power, even without Servitor status:
Quote:
he's found and used the fountain of youth, he's learned extremely powerful medicine, and he's forged contingency deals to have himself resurrected if he should die anyway.

What I'm saying is that he doesn't have to be personally invested in stopping the posse. It's one of his (many) assigned duties, and one that he probably doesn't care much about - either result would be entertaining to him.
And screwing with them might just get hims some powerful minions to beat the competition with. Because corruption is a thing he has a lot of practice with. Twisted Evil

Aside:
Last Sons has some great advice and guidelines about walking through the Hunting Grounds. Basically, the most powerful will around gets to shape the local environment - kind of like a Nightmare on Elm Street.

"The Servitors work in mysterious ways..."
I'm not entirely sure his masters would be cross with him!
Or even, are they all of one mind?

Thx once more, especially for Raven's potential motives and for the Last Sons hint
(rather silly of me not having thought of that before... or my lazyness won)

Now I regret of having already only two glyphs in front of them, with so many ideas and side tracks still untouched in The Flood.
