Hey Clint,
during last game session, a question regarding Rituals arose, once again.
When using Rituals, the effect of the spell has to be determined separately. So the Dramatic Task only covers the Ritual, but not the casting itself. Is that correct?
Example: To cast Disguise using a Ritual, the caster has to make a Dramatic Task (the ritual). This is done at -2 (standard for Dramatic Tasks). After the ritual is successful, the effect of the spell is determined by another casting roll (+2 for the increased effect). If he rolls a 1, the casting is failed. A 2 or more and the power activates as described. Is this correct?
We were discussing because we weren't sure if the ritual IS the casting, or if it only supports it. Based on what you said here, it seemed a bit as if casting Healing could fail (when scoring a 3 or less on the effect roll), even after a successful ritual, but Disguise or Puppet could not (Puppet could be resisted, though, but it would work, even if the result of the effect would only be a 3). We just wanted to be sure.
Thanks a lot! |

Correct.

Pretty much. With the inherent +2, a roll of 2-5 would be a success and a 6 or more would be a raise.

The question was how the +2/+4 to effect worked, and it works by applying to the skill roll to determine the effect of the power after the ritual. It doesn't matter what the power is, once the ritual is successful, the caster makes a skill roll to determine the effect like any activation of a power.
The effect could still be "no effect" if a 1 is rolled, but for most powers the base +2 bonus for a ritual at least guarantees a success (with better chance of a raise). _________________ Clint Black
