Page 53, under Skimming Books:
"An investigator with Knowledge (Mythos) may
skim a Mythos book in a d4 hours. This increases
their Knowledge (Mythos) by +1 and lets them
know what spells the book contains. An investigator
may read a book they have skimmed to add another
+1 to their Knowledge (Mythos) and gain access
to the book’s spell lore. As mentioned elsewhere,
any time an investigator increases their Knowledge
(Mythos) to a +2 bonus, the skill instead converts to
the next highest die type and the investigator loses
a point of Sanity and gains a point of Corruption
as usual."
I seem to recall someone - maybe even Clint - running the numbers and demonstrating that a +1 bonus is actually a greater one than a die type increase. If that's correct, then the progression above is "a one step forward, half step back" sort of thing ...
Assuming I'm recalling the number analysis correctly (and please correct me if I'm not), and suggestions for how else to handle the small increases to the Knowledge skill from skimming? _________________ "It only takes an extra second to be courteous."

Please keep in mind a few factors:
1. The die type also impacts how many penalties the investigator may offset when performing rituals. If you have a d4+1 you could get rid of -4 whereas a d6 could eliminate -6. Big difference.
2. You'll also have a greater chance of getting a Critical Failure with the lesser die type. Snake eyes is still snake eyes and, since Fate is Unkind, you can't spend bennies!
3. You can't learn spells from skimming a book.
---
Yes, you can have some investigators sitting on the cusp with a +1, but the next +1 rolls over to the next die type. The thing is this: an investigator cannot skim more than one book without jumping to the next die type (whether he wants to or not).
No one said the Mythos was fair or the accumulation of knowledge a straight progression. Those who want to seek out eldritch power must make choices.
Ultimately, you want at least one investigator to make a Knowledge (Mythos) roll to give them a little frightful insight into what they're up against.

Well, the numbers are a bit variable, but more importantly, Sean's on target (of course). The impact of the Setting Rules and specific effects of the skill can't be taken into account for a generalized analysis. It's always about the rules as a whole, even with Setting Rules. _________________ Clint Black
