I have seen these Fantasy coins that you can buy and I have played with using fake money in a Deadlands campaign.
So, who here has used coins or fake money as props in their campaigns? How did you do it? How well did it work? Did you go on one for one basis? |

I have found that they make great props for filling out a coin puse found or just lifted that includes clues for further adventure but as for actually using them for monetary bookkeeping in game they aren't really useful.
I use them as Bennies now.

| I have a bunch from Mused Fable - use them as props and as Bennies (nice and heavy, so they don't fly off the table too easily.) |

Same here. I have used various fake coins for bennies. Fantasy and 50 Fathoms settings would be the main places so far.
I've also slowly been collecting Japanese 5 yen coins. These have a hole in the center, and no number on them. Don't have enough for bennies yet though.
I've thought about using them for in-game currency. Far easier than trying to track funds on a character sheet. But I think that get's a bit cost prohibitive. _________________ My delusions of grandeur are way bigger than yours! |

One of our group has a stamp die for making Viking coins. I want to use it to produce some Hellfrost bennies for our games. _________________ Wiggy

If you'd had that problem 5 years ago, when I was stationed in Japan, I coulda helped you out _________________ Aperture Science:

In my Deadlands campaign, I use toy money to track all the PCs finances. Every session they get their money envelope along with their character sheet. They add to the envelope when they are paid and take money out when they buy things. I used toy money along with plastic coins for federal oney and I printed off a lot of confederate bills.
They don't know that I altered some of the confederate bills with a pen, this indicates counterfeit money being spread around as part of the undercover war effort. If you know what you are looking for the marks are really easy to see, but no one noticed them yet.
I actually used the same technique years ago in a classic Deadlands campaign. There the PCs eventually caught on, and it was an epic reveal when they realized. |

For a while, I was traveling to Japan once or twice a year. It's been three years now, and since most of engineering was outsourced, it's very doubtful I'll ever be going again ... at least, not for work. Of course, that's about when I wanted the 5 Yen coins, and I didn't get enough when I was there last. _________________ My delusions of grandeur are way bigger than yours! |
