In preparation for a former player's Christmas visit, I am preparing an AFMBE game. I'll spare you the details, because the most important question is what kind of zombie should I use?

The classic, Romero shambler?

or

The 28 Days Later, Dawn of the Dead remake runner?

A poll around the office has the Runners with a slim lead, 4 to 3.

For the record, I prefer the Marvel Zombies veiw (no, not flying Zombies with superpowers, well...). They're Shamblers when they haven't been fed properly, but turn into Runners when they have. That way you actually get a sense that they need to feed. Explains more about the flesh eating side and gives a sesne that the living really are just food...[/quote]

I voted Shambler, but I like what nonefornic said... Savage Jack

I voted Runner, but only to keep the balance close to even. Smile

I'd also suggest to use both stereotypes. Let the Zombies Shamble about at first, and then surprise your players with sudden outbursts of speed.

Also, the Land of the Dead type Learning Zombie can be pretty terifying when used correctly.

I agree with JackAce on mixing types.

In a past Deadlands game, I put the PCs in a Night of the Living Dead situation with shamblers. They set up and were happily picking off the slow movers as they appeared and were confident that they'd easily survive the night. Then I threw in some Walkin' Dead and described a pair of the zombies suddenly sprinting towards the house and getting to cover from the Sharpshooter before he could fire. Player response was great.

"Whaddya mean sprint? Like fast as a person run? Oh $#!%"

Twisted Evil

It warmed my evil GM's heart.

I agree with them agreeing. Mixing types is good.

Maybe there are two types of zombies that inhabit the world 1) shambling zombies raised via necromantic powers and 2) running viral zombies.

GM: "You see several shambling towards you, and a few that are sitting down."
Player: "Sitting?, Why are they sitting?"
GM: "They appear to be putting on athletic shoes..."

So far, the consensus that I've reached with several people here is that they start as one, then become the other. It's a one shot, so they'll be runners, but if the other players want it to continue I can work a storyline in where the players try to survive long enough for the zombies to decompose so far that they stop being a threat.

I like mixed zombie types. It's not a far stretch to rule that a virus that can bring people back from the dead can mutate them further as well. You could have Shamblers, then regenerating zombies, strong zombies, jumping zombies, zombies that use tools, zombies that are cognizant and refuse to believe they're dead...

The possibilities are endless.

Make it "Survival of the Fittest"
It starts out with slow and fast zombies of which the slow vastly out number the fast. As time progresses, food sources dry up, and the fast ones survive longer while the slow ones deteriorate, leaving a few, fast and hardy surviving zombies left!

And when the players have all but defeated those, have something worse waiting in the wings! (vampires? just a thought)

OR those last few zombies, after devouring all life on earth, turn on each other in a cannibalistic frenzy. Suddenly you have The Omega Zombie facing a strange new world over run by sentient plants, forced to scavage whatever it may for survival...

Here's my take:

Shamblers are more of an environmental hazard than an enemy. Once you know their ways, just don't get cornered by them, etc. Runners are always a threat, and an enemy.

So...if the point of the adventure is to pit your heroes against human enemies against the backdrop of a zompocalypse, use shamblers. If the point is to go toe-to-toe with the zombies, use runners.

The question is, will they be intelligent runners, like in Return of the Living Dead? Wink

I like zombies as kind of a rabid force of nature. They might be smart enough to juke, dodge, or set up a crude trap (velociraptor style) but they won't be tool users or anything like that.

I would say: Take a note from Half Life 2 and make four types!

Shamblers,
Runners,
Poison Headcrab Throwers,
and Zombine! (Zombie Combine from Episodes 1 & 2. They're slightly tougher and often suicidal: pulling out a grenade and running at the player!)

And if you really want some fun, the I Am Legend ghouls are good for experienced groups. Nearly all of the advantages and just one disadvantage: sunlight harms them.

Yeah, not to spoil anything, but I Am Legend is definitely required viewing for anyone posting in this thread.

I voted Shamblers, but mixed types...always gets a panic reaction when used as only a black hearted GM can.

Mmm...brains!

Yeah, that was what I was definitely going for with that comment.

And they were mixed. The first few encounters were in close quarters, where they didn't run. Then the mall security cop saw one across the food court, and it sprinted at him. Another player stared at me with big eyes before stating "I hate you."

For me modern day zombies should always be shamblers as in Dawn of the Dead (1978), one of my all time best horror films. I just loved it when the zombie walked over the obstacles by the helicopter and had his head sliced off by the rotor blades! Smile

Although Dawn of the Dead (2004) was a reasonable movie the running zombies just didn't do it for me.

Smile

I gave my players the stats for zombies in our HoE game this weekend. They got Pace stats for 'shambling' zombies (pace 4). But these weren't shamblers, so when they suddenly started moving faster (Pace 8 ), they were thrown a little off-guard.
Then the zombies started to run, doubling their pace, ... Surprised
