Sung by cowboys of course....
Bad Mage, Bad Mage
Bad Mage, Bad Mage
He flies across the nation, the epitome of sin
He's got the strangest notion that you guys want "in"
His traps are all a-waiting, so let the games begin
A mystic sign, a deadly source
Your deaths will be a tour-de-force... |

| Big bad mage almost made a appearnce in my "Happy magical Rainbow valley ridding academy and home for gifted beastquestrians book". The former reform school girl Swoop (olivia Twirl) now giant bat flyer was telling her back ground (in a cockney accent) about how her mom raised magical caneries and her father was the forman in a coal mine then the big mage brought the mine down. But I mised type Big Bog mage |

One way of extending the life of significant enemies in savage worlds is by improving their "benny soak" so that instead of healing/preventing one wound per success on the soak roll, they prevent two.
One reason this works well is that it's a finite resource; while an enemy with exceptionally high toughness can easily become impossible for your heroes to take down, a villian with this improvement will ast only as long as he has bennies to burn.
Another possibility is increasing the number of wounds that the boss can receive before going down. |

You have to make a Big Bad Mage fight memorable! That means it just can't be a simple gang-up on a high-stats villain.....
If there is one player character with more invested (grudge, brother, etc.) then have the other PCs winnowed away by their own important fights for the invested PC to go one-on-one (works every time - Harry Potter is an example in the first and last stories).
If the PCs all really want to fight, try a spell of copying: each gets a BBM of their own.
I, personally, love to build Extras with rivalries to all the PCs, letting them fight and enjoy individual fights that mean something personally.
Tricks and Traps - like Enter the Dragon - mirror rooms, false doppelgangers....OH! How's about an Illusion that makes all the PCs look like the BBM, then cast that spell that knocks people around on the map and roll a die (Secretly take all players aside before the double spell...tell all but one something secretive, then tell the other that at one point in the near future he will play the mage while you will play thier character....doing so gets him an extra XP).
In massive battle....as the good troops attack the bad troops, the PCs fight their way to the BBM...
Etc. etc. _________________ The eternal struggle takes time, Max. |

My players will not split the party. They've lost huge amounts of honor in L5R, they've lost street cred and contacts in Shadowrun..etc. They will not split the party.
I've found that with my group the whole "evil sacrifices were made" explanation usually suffices. The majority of them are old-school heroic and the others are peer pressured into not doing evil things.
I once tried the gear approach, but once they killed the Big Bad, they wanted the stuff. So it still came down to why they couldn't have it. _________________ When the stars themselves burn out three things will continue kicking a**: Faith, Hope and Love.

Skills and spells out the buttocks. Weakness - make him vulnerable of a physical type attack (he's used to magical combating with other wizards)... you just have to get close enough to him to pull it off. _________________

They will split the party if they have tactical advantage. "You gotta go, Jimmy the Paladin! If we all stay here, we'll let the Big Bad Mage have the time he needs, but we can't all stay to hold the ravening Hordes back..."
As to equipement: they all could be cursed items - curses the Big Bad Mage easily accepted (things like 'Family-Killer', 'Troll-Flesh', 'Smells like Teen Spirit - if Teen Spirit is a toxic waste dump', 'ghoul - must eat live flesh', etc.) _________________ The eternal struggle takes time, Max. |

What popped into my head right away is a professional edge:
Archmage
Requirements: Legendary, Smarts D12, Arcane Spellcasting D12+2, Knowledge: Arcana D12+2, Improved Recharge, 8+ Arcane Powers.
Allows casting more than spell a round at a greater risk of Backlash. Each extra spell cast in the same round imposes a -2 on the Arcane Spellcasting roll. Any total of 1 or less with this modifier (only) is considered Backlash. If multiple Backlashes occur in the same round they can mount up to Wounds very quickly. _________________ Dean: "Ya' know she could be faking."

Sam: "Dude, you're not gonna poke her with a stick?"
