Obviously, SW is best. Smile However, out of the following, which is your favorite generic / core / universal RPG system, and WHY?

(PS: I've limited the poll choices to those I'm most interested in at the moment, but if there's another not in the poll that you really want to talk about, that's ok too.)

Heroquest for me. I can do anything I like it, and it's story driven.

FATE has become my game of choice for highly narrative F2F play. However it doesn't seem to do well as a play-by-post game, and it lacks Savage Worlds' charm when running a battle against 30 nazis, imo.

I hadn't heard of Heroquest before, thanks for the tip, Wiggy.

FATE definitely looks interesting - I have the Diaspora PDF, and I'm curious about the new Dresden Files RPG.

I love FATE (and its predecessor Fudge) but recently I've developed an appreciation for the Ubiquity system as well. The main game is Hollow Earth Expedition and Wiggy has recently written All For One. You can find more out at Exile Game Studio.

I've been playing Hero since 82 and find it to be pretty simple (especially since 6th ed was put out) using a single unified core mechanic.

But people overlook the basic core rulebook of 134 pages and fixate on the mega tome that includes hundreds of examples and expanded explanations.

But I am beginning to ramble.... Mr. Green

In 10 or 15 years when PEG combines the SWEX with all of the additions in the setting books into a single comprehensive book people will all be crying about it being too complicated too Wink

I just ordered All for One. It looks to be interesting....

I voted BRP, due to my deep and abiding love for Call of Cthulhu.

It's too bad there is no option to vote for Ubiquity.

I'm a new convert to that system thanks to TAG's awesome All for One setting/rulebook, and I have to say it is dynamite.

If you love SW (and who doesn't?), you owe it to yourself to check out Ubiquity - you won't be disappointed.

There's no generic rule set for Ubiquity so you'll want to pick up one of the three main settings, each of which has the full rule set contained in the main book.

The options are:
ALL FOR ONE (Swashbuckling Horror set in Musketeer's France) - Triple Ace Games

HOLLOW EARTH EXPEDITION (Pure pulp goodness) - Exile Studios

DESOLATION (Fantasy setting in a world recovering from a magical apocalypse) - Greymalkin Designs

I very highly recommend grabbing one or all three of these great books.

Enjoy!
Joe

I enjoy both Cortex and BRP but i haven't run very many games with them.

I have also used Fudge on a few occasions and liked it, but it is a bit clanky and not as smooth as Cortex and SW IMO. Maybe FATE is better but i haven't gotten to that yet Smile

My vote was for the d6 system, partly because of my affinity for the ol' Star Wars d6 system, but also the fact that it's dead simple and you can explain it by simply saying "Roll a bunch of d6s and try to hit a target number".

Now acing or bennies would have made that system rock.

FYI, Strands of FATE is coming out in a matter of days. It is a "generic FATE" separated from system, but using and enhancing the Fate3.0 mechanics from several sources.

Well, from the choices given, I went with FATE, but I'm with Wiggy. Heroquest 2 is badass. I especially recommend it with Nameless Streets, a modern, noir-horror setting from Cubicle 7.

Thanks for the head's up - I'll keep an eye out. I'm definitely interested in checking out FATE more closely.

Why don't I see RISUS on that list? Very quick game to set up and play.
"What do you want your character to be?"
"Drinking, fighting, singing Viking!"
"Alright, how about Viking(4), Drinking(3), Singing(3)?"
"Perfect! What does that mean?"
"Roll 4d6 for VIKING! things, 3d6 for either DRINKING! or SINGING! things, sound good?"
"Alright! Let's play!"

It's not meant to be a comprehensive list. It's just a list of systems that I'm remotely interested in. I'm looking for some input to narrow my choices down. Having said that, y'all are quite welcome to mention others.

GURPS - we had so many good times together back when I could spend 15 hours prepping for a 5 hour session.

Oh, well in that case I'll tell you I voted GURPS but that's because it's the only game on the list I've really looked at. It looks like it could be a bit complicated on the DM side, but it's super simple for the players. Though I would suggest RISUS if you ever want a pick up and play game and for some reason don't want to do something like Savage Worlds.
