|
|
Have just a few questions for E. Mike, C. Steve, or other Indianopolians about hotels within 10? minutes of convention center, and shutdown time for mass transit (i.e. busses). I've stayed at various places, and was lucky enough to find affordable hotels (2005 or 06 GC one had a van that dropped people off at the covention center and picked us up across the street from a nearby White Castle). Unfortunately, I don't remember the name of the chain. I'm trying to avoid 20 minute drives, cabs, and having to re-park every day. I know. Good luck. The other problem is that most night sessions run til at least 11pm. Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't mass transit shut down around that time? If anybody's familiar with any 40-60 dollar range hotels that are within reach of mass transit to and from the con, the advice would be much appreciated. Thanks. _________________ "Rommel, you magnificent bastard! I read your book!" George C. Scott as Patton (1970) |

Hi Tyler! I know absolutely nothing <and I could stop there> about Indy’s bus system.
I’m hoping some other savages might know the hotel(s) with shuttle service near to the convention center. Gencon has THIS info about Hotels. _________________

That's because the only thing there is to know is that it won't get you where you want to go, when you want to get there. _________________ "No, no thats not how you uphold the law...You gotta get 'em in the head, they go down quicker." -Officer Barbrady |

That's very inspiring, and pretty much what I figured. _________________ "Rommel, you magnificent bastard! I read your book!" George C. Scott as Patton (1970) |

Well, it seems a great many busses shut down very early. There are a few lines that run until 11:45pm. So, it's just a "small" matter of finding the right bus stop nearest the convention, wrapping up night time sessions by at least 10:45 or earlier, and finding hotels that happen to along those specific routes. Not sure how easy thatms going to be, but here goes nothing. _________________ "Rommel, you magnificent bastard! I read your book!" George C. Scott as Patton (1970) |

Well, all I can offer is two simple solutions.
1. Once you find a bus route, use Kayak to find your hotel www.kayak.com as they have maps and provide you a great search engine across discount websites.
2. If worse comes to worse, I am sure that some of us can give up some floor space at one of our hotels one night so you are not stranded. I am sure I will see you around, so as long as my room mate is ok, you can always plan on one night at chez Wherever we are staying.
Ping me via PM if you want to feel a bit more secure and I can trade you my cell phone, and check with my brother.
Off hand I think I am the renaissance, but I have to check my reservation. |

Live on the north side (10 miles from downtown). It takes me 30 minutes by car, on a good day, to get to my office (south of the convention center).
Sadly, our bus system (IndyGo) sucks.
If you are in a downtown hotel, most are w/in a few blocks of the CC. If you are NOT downtown, it's going to take you a little while to get there (20-30 minutes). However, I seem to recall seeing a lot of shuttle buses from outlying hotels, so you should be okay.
If you have any specific questions (i.e., where to eat, drink, get a nice haircut, etc.), message me or reply to this thread. |

Well, if you book at the La Quinta Inn East we can share cabs for some trips. Yellow Cabs seem to be okay. No idea how their prices compare to others in Indy but the rates are much better than we pay over here. _________________ Wiggy

I stayed in that hotel back in January so that we could fly out of Indy very early the next morning. They had a number of shuttles that ran out to the airport 24/7, so it's not a big leap to think that they may run to the convention center. Their phone# is 317-247-4281 if you want to call them and check. |

Wow. I sure appreciate the outpouring of support from the "Savage" community. So much support that even Wiggy has commited a serious breech of security. As one of the most prolific writers in the rpg realm today, you have disclosed the name of the hotel in which you and Robin are staying. It was going to be hard to keep rabid Sav Worlds fanboys (takes one to know one) away from not just one, but TWO TAG luminiaries who are making their historic first appearance at a high-profile convention. Well, my lad...you've been compromised. As if signing a million books, and printed pdf's of your non-print works (guilty), and people pestering you with questions about the UK, Monty Python, and Doctor Who wasn't enough, you'll have them following you to your hotel now. Hope you registered under an alias. Maybe S. Hensley, or Mr. C. Black, for example. Not sure if that'll help, but it's all I've got. BUT SERIOUSLY.......
I've gotten everything worked out. All of the suggestions were much appreciated. In the process of looking into much put off arrangements, a couple of unexpected offers came in. You know who you are. All I have to do now is buy my badge onsite, make the 10 hour roundtrip, etc. I'll say this, we've got a good bunch of people here at the forum, and many of them are coming to GenCon. In between games, I encourage you to meet some of them. See you next week! _________________ "Rommel, you magnificent bastard! I read your book!" George C. Scott as Patton (1970) |

| I will be driving down from Chicago and be in town Wednesday through Friday night (I might extend the trip to participate in Savage Saturday). If anyone needs a ride while I am down there I would have no issues playing taxi if I am headed in or out of town. Maybe we can get a phone number list of those attending in case someone needs a ride etc. |

But surely you'll want a bit of privacy at some point. And by letting every Tom, Dick, and Shane know where you're staying, you probably won't get any. _________________ The rabbit is cuddly. Kids like little cuddly sidekicks. I mean-- The rabbit-- It's a time-tested-- Okay, the rabbit bites.

Well, I don't expect to find them trying to break into my room and steal souvenirs from my suitcase. This is my first visit to the US, and there's no guarantee we'll be back next year, so if they want to see the strange British man then they can, so long as they buy me drinks and act politely.
EDIT: And talking aloud paid off. A fellow Savage has offered Rob and I a lift to the con each morning, so good things have already happened. _________________ Wiggy

Yes...a "lift". We might just find Wiggy beaten and bruised on a corner of Indy muttering something about "they just wanted to know the secrets of Hellfrost and the Gray Legion". |

I was glad to hear that a Savage taxi would be ferrying you from the hotel. I was worried about how much those rates would be at that distance from the con. Your con-cabbie is one of the best. _________________ "Rommel, you magnificent bastard! I read your book!" George C. Scott as Patton (1970) |
