I'm new to Savaging, and I've been running a DL:R campaign for about 3 or 4 sessions now. I would like to make sure that I have been running combat correctly. For example:
A player gets hit by a Martial Artist who rolls 4 over the player's Toughness. Does they player take an automatic wound? What if the roll aced and they rolled 8 over, or 12 over. Would they automatically take 3 wounds unless they soaked it?
The TN for shooting is 4. Is there any way to modify that in combat? I've only seen someone miss with a gun once, and that was because he rolled snake eyes.
If someone uses Healing on you, the most they can heal is 2 wounds with a raise, correct?
Thank you all soooo much, I really appreciate the help. |

Yep, on all counts (though it doesn't require a Martial Artist; any attack would do it). 4 over would do one wound, 8 over would do two wounds, 12 over would do three wounds, and so on.
Also note that Soaking doesn't have to remove all the damage to be effective in some way. A character who takes 2 wounds, and rolls even one basic success, still reduces the damage to 1 wound even if they don't remove it entirely.

All the ways a person would normally make themselves harder to hit, which is to say to get Cover of some sort primarily (just dropping Prone in open ground grants Medium Cover). Characters can also crouch when moving to make themselves harder to hit.
Another effective defense is range. Getting into Medium Range inflicts a -2 penalty to attacks. Get into Medium Range and drop prone and the attacker is at -4 to attack.
Of course another way to use "range" is to get adjacent to the shooter. If their weapon is larger than a pistol, they can't use it at all, and if it isn't, then they are now firing against Parry.
But mostly, be smart and take cover when lead starts flying.
