|

Does such a tutorial, guide or such exist? I am wanting to do an X-Files conversion plus I have a LOT of other ideas, but I want to make sure I cover all the right bases and dot all the I's and such. So, can anyone help and point me in the right direction? _________________

All I can suggest is check out some of the better conversions, you'll know it when you read one and go from there. Start here: Savage Heroes _________________ Dean: "Ya' know she could be faking."
Sam: "Yeah, what do you wanna do, poke her with a stick?"
[Dean nods]
Sam: "Dude, you're not gonna poke her with a stick?"

The GM's chapter in SWEX has some pretty good advice for setting-building in general. It basically boils down to, "do as little work as you possibly can," but gives some examples of why and how to do that.

If you can read German, there's a great do's and don'ts about making conversions thanks to our friends at the bloody sword courtesy of Cable Houge here. It's looking at a lot of things like what are you using, how you will use SW, and avoiding the idea of using SW as a bug-fix. It's probably the best and most detailed outlining of what a conversion should aim for and what sort of things make or break conversions and what the most common pitfalls of a conversion are.
One of these days, maybe I'll get around to translating it. Perhaps when I have a lot of free time and not two term papers due by Tuesday. _________________ Don

| There's a lot of good advice throughout Chapter Six in the SWEE. My most favorite bit of advice is the "Trim the Fat!" piece. The feel of setting doesn't always need mechanics to back it up; it can be better produced by the tone you set for the campaign yourself. Don't rely on the rules completely as a replacement for your imagination. |

| To be honest, there really isn't a whole lot of anything to "convert" to run an X-files game. Mulder, Scully and most of the people they meet are just normal humans. A few people have something odd about them (or the place they inhabit), which is what drew Mulder to the case. So, you're really just running a mystery game with a small twist in each adventure. |

I would say the 2 cardinal rules for conversions (technically I wouldn't call this a conversion since you are not converting "X-Files the game" into savage worlds) is this:
1. Convert the "Feel" of the world above anything else.
2. Unless a specific rule is, in your opinion, VITAL to the feel of the world, don't try to convert it.
Take the world of Dark Sun. Convert the world over. The only rules that need to be "converted" over would probably be those that deal with the dangers of magic. Other than that, don't worry about it. |

Hey, i have been working on a full convert for Dark Sun for 3 months (on and off) :p
Just need to round out my Psionic powers and work up Wrist Razors and Cahulaks! oh and a few monsters.
That being said, figure out how much work you want to do and then do as little as possible to achieve your goal. Follow the other poster's advise and try to convert the feel rather than every niggling rule.
If your players are jazzed about the setting let them convert the portions of your rules that they will be using (Looking at Arcane Background and professional edges) for their characters. |
