| Just finished The Maiden Voyage. The players have encountered a frigate of the British East India Company. Its sails are tattered. Instantly, the players have decided to take this ship by force. They met Equias, and we're headed to the teeth to meet Tressa the Red. I fear the plot point will be derailed because they've decided to turn pirate. Suggestions? |

Roll with it. It's a big world. If they need a reminder that they're supposed to be at least a bit heroic then have them stumble across the remains of various other pirates. Scenes of mutilation, devastation, and horror should at least make them want to be better than those other guys.
If it doesn't work then have them run into some of the competition. After they all die, tell them to make HEROES, damnit. _________________ "Got a problem? I've got the solution: Rocket Launcher."

Or ask them if they'd rather play a different game. Like Pirates of the Spanish Main. _________________ "I had a whole bunch of advice for you but got ninja'd by newForumNewName. I'd just do what he says." -- 77IM

*shrug* Why not? Like he said, it's a big, big world, and they are *not* the biggest or meanest fish in the sea. There's lots of ways to keep them engaged. Some thoughts:
- Rival pirates might not take kindly to these "upstarts" preying on their choice trade lines.
- They sack many, many merchant vessels ... until they come across a missionary ship full of orphans en route to a safe harbor.
- One of the "Pirate Lords" (any of the named pirates, like L'ollonaise, Blackbeard, the Queens, etc.) tries to recruit them for an armada. If they refuse, well ...
- If they're really successful, they catch the attention of Duckworth...
In short, I don't see many ways in which being pirates wouldn't work, but you would need to select the Savage Tales to use judiciously.
Good luck! _________________ "Your GM is metagaming ... and wrong!" |

They're in the process of meeting one or two of Earth's well known lady pirates(from the maneaters tale). They've gone over to their ship to "help" with the tattered sails. Help would also include thinking about killing my background character, as well as Captain John Smith(they saved him from being sacrificed as a part of an Ugak ritual-an adventure card). Either way, Anne Bonny surprised them by opening fire with two flintlocks. The crew up top responded in kind with hidden weapons(per the tale). I could tell one of the players didn't like this. As written, the tale has more in store for the unsuspecting players. Would've happened even if they were a bunch of goody goodies. If they try to kill my player(despite also being the gm)for being loyal to the captain, I'll unload a can of whoop ass. Lol It's going to be interesting. . This is the 4th or 5th time I've tried to launch this plot point. Two times halfway through. Other attempts less than halfway through. I'm getting all the way through it this time. |

Pirates need a home base. Otherwise, where are they going to spend all that loot?
So what happens when their home gets threatened? Remember that bar wench Mary Luis? Is Stan the Pirate Man gonna let his warm body back in port drown by the rising seas? |

One of the great things about 50F is that being pirates is a very valid choice. The "heroes" don't have to be good guys at all; they just have to not want to see the entire world (including all sources of food and materials) sink under the sea.

| I'm not sure any of these characters were made with "pirate" in mind. It seems one player thought turning pirate, and committing mutiny by the second session was the thing to do. The other players latched on to this, as well. I'm not sure if they'll all feel the same way after the third session. The instigator doesn't like the Sav Worlds system so far. That might be fueling some of this. He prefers hit points. Don't get me wrong. This guy isn't just a D&D 4, 3.5, and Pathfinder devotee. He's enjoying Castles and Crusades, do it's not a case of disliking any games except for the name brands. Anyway, we'll see what happens next Wednesday. |

Anne Bonny hires the group on to help her find the map of some buried treasure from a Spanish pirate. She tracks down the son/daughter of the last survivor from the crew, now working as a barista. They find out that the captain had the map tattooed on the the ships' cat, who is now in the care of an old lady in (random free port). When they get there, word has it she's a voodoo priestess and very, very protective of her 100+ cats. After getting away with the cat (or maybe it's corpse) they brave an island full of angry natives and find out the barista was tailing them to steal the treasure for himself and his fledgling pirate crew. I'm sure you could wedge a librarian in there somewhere.....

a good start but the Librarian is a lore master in some obscure archive ware a map or diary is hidden. She has week eyes major, a d12 +4 in research and knows one spell Silent tongue.
And the Barista knows alchemy.
Then at the end of the adventure all four get together to form a all chick super team in a cross media add blitz for 50 fathoms _________________ http://s61.photobucket.com/albums/h51/Vondan/ |

When I ran 50 Fathoms my group turned privateer pretty quick. They basically spent the loot from the first ship they scuffled with to but their letter of Marquee. I had enough math heads in my group that they quickly realized it's almost impossible to survive in 50 Fathoms if you try to be an honest merchant and still pay your crew as instructed. The real money is in loot and salvage.
That being said 50 Fathoms is a great sandbox setting. I just had a recipe box filled with all the common beasties. So many dead characters, everyone had a good time until the characters had such a large fleet it was getting hard to keep track of who was captaining what ship where. |
