Ok, so let me set the stage first.
One of my players, put together a tinhorn lawyer from boston, based on a character from boston legal. Drew two jokers in trait generation. mystery past came up: Harrowed & Cursed Relic. Not a big deal as this player likes to play non-combatants. i wasnt worried about him becomming a combat monkey that overpowered the game.
so we talked about it. We decided that he had been killed and returned from the grave, following his induction and then confrontation with the masonic lodge of boston. (See "Back East: the north" for the lowdown on the Boston Freemasons).
after crawling out of the dirt, and fearing for his families life, he snuck into the lodge, stole an object from the lodge (The relic), left his bussiness card so they knew it was him, and headed west.
So this brings us to the question. what was the relic... what powers and taints did it have. It would have had to have been something of spiritual significance to the members of the lodge, something important to their work, but that could be alot of different things. I dont know what any of you know about the masonic order, but they have alot of props in their ceremonial work. From gavels and trowels, to squares, levels and bibles, they have ceremonial clothing and dozens of little trinkets and amulets.
Needless to say, it is alot for me to mull over... anyone have any suggestions? |

When my grandpa passed away I received a lot of his Masonic "props". As I am a collector of hats I received several of them, most notably a "Napoleon" style with a magnificent plume, a "train Conductor's" cap with a red cross and {my most favorite} a brushed velvet top hat...
Where am I going with this you ask? Give him a ceremonial hat that bestows a sight into the "true" soul of a man, just one man a day. The taint is a slow mistrust of all he has seen, for he is never sure if it is a two way sight. Each time he busts on the reading it adds a -1 to the paranoia {spirit} check when that check, until he starts to distrust all those around him… _________________ Proud co-creator of the 1,000+ Random Encounter Generator found here! |

| the velvet top hat is acually not a bad one, and as an ex-mason and lawyer, the power you suggest fits the character pretty good. |
