A - We're really starting to wander far afield from the original topic. Perhaps we ought to straighten up.
B - Savagevania is formally denied the right to use the Savage Worlds logo, the Savage Worlds Licensee logo, or claim it's part of Savage Worlds or Pinnacle Entertainment. We will retroactively lift those bans as appropriate and apply a 75% royalty fee should Savagevania become a sufficiently profit-bearing enterprise...

Some things are safe and forgiving, but knowledge isn't one of those things. Once you even begin to guess at the horror in the Realms of Cthulhu, an unlikely smile from the fates may be your only chance. Hold your last shred of a chance tightly in your hand with Realms of Cthulhu bennies! Each design features a different glimpse into that mind-curdling world, but they may still save your life or your sanity... for better or worse...
Designed for use as Bennies for the Savage Worlds setting Realms of Cthulhu, these custom poker chips could be used as counters or tokens for nearly any game. _________________ Kristian

Hello All,
Some interesting discussions going on over on our forums, but I've reposted my thoughts for your consideration.

My group has two characters trained in psychology and one Psychoanalyst, so I don't mind hitting them with more madness.
I was thinking of incorporating a rule similar to the "gang-up" bonus to sanity checks: -1 to guts check, and +1 mental anguish for every creature past the first with a maximum of penalty of 4.
Thoughts? |
1. What is the play style? This can have a major impact on what you're planning.
2. The two characters trained in psychology are of no use to the party if they go nuts too. (This paradigm is different from healers in a party that can hang back from combat and function as support members. Everyone is subject to the roll when they see a beastie.)
3. What is your game play intent? Short one-off or long term campaign? If the latter case, these harsh propositions can seriously impact campaign sustainability.
Note: With the proper restrictions of bennies, adventures should be tough enough.
Two options occurred to me as possibilities to explore.
Caveat: Neither of these have been attempted and are mental exercises that may warrant exploration.
1. The Quick and Dirty Method. If the characters are outnumbered by creatures, increase the Guts check penalty by 1, otherwise leave alone (i.e. a Terror rating can never be reduced below its base number.)
Example: Two (2) investigators encounter five (5) Deep Ones, Guts checks are made at -2. Should five (5) characters encounter three (3) Deep Ones then Guts checks are made at -1 (as normal.)
2. The Horde Method: For each creature above the number of characters, increase the Guts check penalty by 1, otherwise leave alone (as in option 1.) The Horde penalty can not exceed an additional -4 to the base Terror penalty.
Example: Two (2) investigators encounter five (5) Deep Ones, Guts checks are made at -4 (Terror: -1, Horde: -3). Should the two (2) heroes stumble into a cave full of Deep Ones (7+), Guts checks are made at -5 (Terror: -1, Horde: -4) as the Horde penalty can never exceed -4.
This second example mirrors the "gang up" effect you are shooting for, but doesn't provide the more radical bonus you are proposing (as in physical combats, not everyone is ganged up on equally). This encourages the "safety in numbers" and the "pack mentality" tropes.
As stated above, neither have been tested and am curious to hear what the reader thinks about these options.

I've been trying to figure out which one of these I'd use. Turns out it's both.
For a campaign in which the sanity rules are dialed to Gritty, I'd stick with method 1--investigators have already got it pretty tough. For a Pulpy Sanity campaign, I'd go with method 2 to really make a horde of creatures something to be afraid of.
Hopefully I'll be able to try out #1 in a few weeks when the game picks up again. _________________ Matthew Cutter

Cutter,
Glad to hear we're on the same page. That's pretty much the approach that I'd try as well. I'm curious to hear how this pans out in play. I'll be starting up some RoC gaming as well in the very near future, so we'll have to compare notes.
Best,

Question 1 Are there any pre gen characters from the fine folks at reality blurs preferably on your nifty character sheet?
Question 2 any one sheet style adventures from you guys as well?
Question 3 any chance of a form filliable version of your character sheet?
Question 4 are there any plans for a Realms of Cthulhu screen soonish?
thanks in advance for your time
sincerely

Answer 1: I have some, and we'll see about getting them up. They are not, however, on the official character sheet.
Answer 2: Not at present.
Answer 3: We'll look into that. If so, it'll make getting pregens (per 1) up a lot easier.
Answer 4: It's going to be awhile yet.
At present, most of my attentions have been focused on development for the 1920s Charleston Plot Point Campaign/Sourcebook: Echo of Dead Leaves. It's coming along swimmingly.
Yours in Terror,

I've been working on a slightly tongue in cheek Delta Green themed one sheet which I hope Sean will accept when I finish it (writer's block and having at one point misplaced it have resulted in delays). The title is Shoggoth Prayer. If you're clever enough, that will give you an idea as to what it's about. _________________ The rabbit is cuddly. Kids like little cuddly sidekicks. I've been chatting about it mainly on our Facebook page. I've been putting up random musings as the process unfolds.

ah.. that is why I didn't hear about it. I don't use facebook or other social networks. They have alweays been more of a pain then they are worth. And they are completely unorganized causing more problems. Obviously many people disagree with me, but I prefer a forum where I can stop by every few days and actually find the conversations I am interested in, rather than a chaotic unorganized babble of posts and spam.
sorry....tend to babble a bit on my anti-facebook soapbox

Hello all you Spooky Savages out there!
There is something about this holiday that just makes us crazy. (Maybe it's because I'm holed up writing more dark delights, or it's the rain, or the weird thing locked in the attic that whispers to me in my sleep? I dunno.)
We are having a special deal now through Halloween!
The PDF is $9.99 and you get it free if you order the book from our shop.
Go crazy!
Take care,
