For some of the spells, it doesn't mention if they're an automatic hit or not... For instance, Curse says range is touch, but doesn't mention having to roll a successful fighting attack before casting.
So... Do you roll fighting first, then if successful decide to cast the spell and roll the spell skill?
Or...do you decide to cast the spell, and on a successful spell skill roll automatically touch the person? _________________ Raising the next generation of Savage Worlds players |

This is a good question for the Core Rules forum, but here's what I see.
Page 108 of the hardbound SWD says (under Range) that an Arcane skill is used as the attack skill for ranged Powers. I've always interpreted that to mean that the Arcane skill is used in place of Fighting for making a touch attack. It still has to beat the target's Parry, but the attack gains +2 from being a Touch Attack. So it's just one roll.
In the case of Curse from DLR, the target still gets an opposed Spirit roll. So to take effect, the caster has to beat the both target's Parry and Spirit roll with their one roll.
At least, that's how I'd handle it. _________________ My blog: http://ninjasridingdinosaurs.wordpress.com/ - Now with occassional updates! |

You could go one of few ways:
Make a touch attack (+2 to hit, I believe) and if successful, then make a AB Power skill roll. Two rolls, but I think this method is the fairest.
Have the player roll the lower of the Fighting or AB Power skill and use that both for the to hit and successful casting. This could allow the character make another Power with a MAP though. I think this is the more likely answer. It is already like that for some Weird Science inventions (say like Shock Gloves using the Smite power).
Use the AB Power skill to both determine to hit and success like ranged spells as mentioned already. Personally, I don't like this one as much. _________________ Playing: Deadlands Noir, Planescape via D&D 4th ed

If a power has a range of Touch and the target does not wish to be touched, then it takes a Touch Attack to use it as per the core rules...
"A character who simply wants to touch a foe (usually to deliver a magical effect of some kind) may add +2 to his Fighting roll."
So in a combat situation, the caster has to pull off two actions, activating the power with arcane skill and touching the target with a Fighting roll. _________________ Clint Black

That gives me a thought... (what a concept! )
What if you activate the power, a curse in this instance, then miss the Fighting roll. Can the enemy sidestep and shove one of your allies against you to set off the power?
