I always like the idea of weapons with differing traits for the character to pick from like:
This assault rifle does 2d10 damage but only has a Range: 15/30/60, RoF: 2, Ammo: 20 and Requires Min Str d8 but the rifle and the ammo are expensive
or
This assault rifle does 2d6 damage has a Range of 30/60/120, RoF: 4, Ammo: 60 but weights 50% more than the average assault rifle and has the Snapfire note
Things that allow players to pick what kind of weapon feature they want most. I always wanted to make a random gun tables to simulate the Borderlands video game drop system for bazillions of truly outrageous weapons. _________________ Playing: Deadlands Noir, Planescape via D&D 4th ed

Well guns don't necessarily just get more powerful.
accuracy and reliability improve. Sometimes sound generated decreases. Also you have better use of recoil and advanced materials to lighten the weight of the weapon.
There has been experimentation into caseless rounds so there is a lighter round being fired. Rail guns have no chemical reactions to shoot the round. Some of the Glocks have both ceramic and plastics used in manufacturing process.
Kriss vector rifles like seen in new Total Recall handles the round recoil differently so less pressure is put on the wielder. |

In fact, they rarely do.
The amount of power an arquebuss delivers at optimal range is ... amazing. Modern rifles don't really deliver any more power - but the improvements in range and rate of fire are staggering.
Future weapons will probably focus on:
materials changes, allowing for lighter weapons that are easier to handle or stronger weapons that can handle more powerful propellant loads.
alternate propulsion, for increased projectile speed, faster cycling times, or operations in unusual terrains.
non-projectile systems, that utilize non-kinetic energy. Lasers and so forth. Currently, the energy required is prohibitive.
counter-measures, designed to mitigate or even eliminate certain categories of weapons from the battlefield. This is possibly the most out-there. A device that can cause all steel within a mile to weld to itself would invalidate most firearms.
non-lethal applications, allowing for utilization in crowd control and law enforcement situations. Not likely to affect combat, but a major direction of weapon development.
automation, allowing the user to utilize a greater degree of cover while firing; also, automating the utilization of supporting fire (artillery and air strikes). This will likely prove unsuccessful, as an aggressive combat mindset is key to successful combat operations. Hiding in a hole and pulling a trigger does not foster an aggressive combat mindset. _________________ "Got a problem? I've got the solution: Rocket Launcher."
