Does everyone else use the attack penalty for large/huge creatures? For example, do you give the dragon a -4 to attack human-sized opponents? That penalty sure makes it difficult for the dragon to hit, even with a d10 Fighting (plus Wild Die). I know that I totally ignore that penalty, and I've not had any TPKs. Just curious how that is handled at other tables.

| Yes, I apply the penalty (or bonus in the case of small creatures), although my size categories are more granular: Minuscule (-4), Tiny (-3), Diminutive (-2), Small (-1), Medium (0-1), Big (2-3), Large (4-5), Massive (6-7) and Huge (8+). |

How easy is it for you to catch a mouse?
Of course i use these modifiers. Since i play Hellfrost primarrily, i use the Knockback rules, that base on this difference.
It's feels a bit unfair, that your übercool ancient Hellfrost dragon looks like one the Keystone kops when attacking in melee, but there are always smarter ways to attack a smaller target. _________________ There are 10 types of people in the world: Those who know binary and those who don't. |

I understand the reasoning behind the rule, I just find that having dragons act like "Keystone kops when attacking in melee" to be anti-climatic, not to mention anti-genre.

The attack penalty does a good job of balancing the higher damage, allowing dragons to choose between claws (low accuracy but high damage) and flaming breath (high accuracy but low damage, at least relative to the claws). Remove the low accuracy from claws, and you remove much of the incentive to use their breath.
Don't forget that the dragon can also wild attack for +2, and with Improved Frenzy they get to roll two d10s as well as a d6 and pick the two highest.
If you really want to increase their chance to hit in melee, I'd suggest reducing their Size. |
