Hey all,

So in working on my Dark Sun adaption, I'm planning alternate summon ally tables for the three major magic types that can use that power. I have cultists pretty much planned out at this point, and want to keep sorcerers more or less by the book. That leaves shamans as something of a work in progress as I'm retooling the summoning list for animals and spirits.

This leaves me looking for a bit of inspiration. Has anyone else tooled around with summon ally to tweak it for their campaign? Do you give the player more freedom to specify the type of ally? Or do you just leave it alone?

Curious,
Tom

So, elemental cultists and Summon Ally:

Cost / Rank / Ally
2 / Novice / Sprite
3 / Seasoned / elemental beast, lesser elemental
4 / Veteran / elemental
5 / heroic / greater elemental
6 / legendary / genie?

I tweaked it for my Elder Scrolls conversion because in the games, there are certain creatures that you can summon (you can see the stats for the creatures in the PDF if you aren't familiar with the games):

Cost / Rank / Ally Types
3 / Novice / Scamp, Skeleton
4 / Seasoned / Clannfear, Flame Atronach
5 / Veteran / Daedroth, Frost Atronach
6 / Heroic / Hunger, Storm Atronach
7 / Legendary / Dremora, Golden Saint

In general, I would say that this table is weaker overall compared to the normal Summon Ally table. In the end though, it felt right to me since it was a straight correlation of the creatures that could be summoned from the source material.

That's the impression I came away with my own decisions after letting them marinade a bit, Thunderforge. I figure if the base Novice is Bodyguard and Experienced Merc, any alternative needed to be comparable. So I redid my lists accordingly. It helped that I realized (duh!) that my conversions don't have to be literal – they can serve a better role in the game this way.

So here are my final alternative lists for summon ally:
Elemental Cultist
Novice: Lesser Elemental
Seasoned: Elemental Beast
Veteran: Elemental
Heroic: Greater Elemental
Legendary: Genie

Shaman
Novice: Guardian Spirit
Seasoned: Spirit Tracker, Primal Spirit
Veteran: Elemental
Heroic: Spirit Warden, Greater Elemental
Legendary: Spirit of the Land

Sorcerer (identical to the standard list except for...)
Seasoned: Dagorran, Elemental Beast

I also formalized my alternative shape change table, which was slightly easier:
Novice: Bat, cat, janx, kes’trekel, rat, scorpion, viper (small), z’tal
Seasoned: Erdlu, floater, jhakar, kank, pulp bee, rasclinn, zhackal
Veteran: Crodlu, insect swarm, kluzd, lirr, razorwing, tagster, wezer
Heroic: Cilops, crodlu (heavy), erdland, inix, scorpion (barbed)
Legendary: Kirre, klar, megapede

And that pretty much put the wraps on my Dark Sun conversion. Character creation begins in two weeks! Woot!
