| These don't seem too S&S to me, but then maybe it's just me. So how have others dealt with these in game? just allow them and not worry about it? has it seemed to change the mood and feel of the game? |

| If they don't fit your concept of S&S and you're the GM running the setting, by all means take them out. From my understanding, its less powerful sorcery as opposed to variety and type of powers that is more prevalent in the genre. I personally aren't bothered by either of those powers, especially Bolt which is only a Novice ranked power. Fire, Ice and Darkness trappings fit best with my concept of how they'd exist in a S&S setting, especially darkness for some reason. Blast is a power I might consider toning down a bit - don't currently have a PC in my game with it. For it, I'd possibly considier disallowing the highest form of LBT w/3d6 damage and maybe no higher than the 4 pp level of MBT w/3d6. |

Both powers are very limited in who has them. Since the default setting is only one arcane background per party, they should be rare. If and when and if blast comes up (since we only have a Lotus master) it will depend greatly on the trapping to keep it in the tone of the game.
I have no issue with them being in my game due to the rarity, but would strongly enforce the caster to take a trapping that fits the dark S&S world view. |

I'd say they should have very heavy trappings (as is suggested for any powers) - including some negative effects. No 'a bold of lightning flies from his arms' but 'He points at you using an ancient language that gives you creeps - you feel something crawling on your forehead, and this something starts to eat it's way into your head'. If defender is shaken, he's just paying attention to fighting these off; A defender unable to shake them off continues to get damage - although he could forego his shaken recovery check to act normally automatically while receiving extra damage. On trait roll of 1, the caster is hit by these creatures himself.
And a blast could be ground falling under opponent's feet (or roof or wall collapse on them), those shaken must make a Strength check on their next action or be unable to move. This requires sorcerer's staff that is hit to the surface, and must also be drawn off with a Strength check (free as part of the casting) or it's stuck. The edge of the area must be adjacent to the caster, and trait roll of 1 causes also the caster to be hit.
I actually used the latter in my Iron Heroes campaign, it was quite popular power, used more as a tool though. I wonder if it's a bit too flashy for B&B?
Hmm, maybe we need a trappings library for B&B powers _________________

Sean, there is a good number of trapping examples in Golden Edition, and you'll find another entirely new set in Jalizar, City of Thieves .
About this specific topic, Bolt and Blast requires a good use of trappings to make them "in theme".
Some examples you could find useful
--------------------
Invisible Force. The sorcerer whispers forbidden words of power and you feel something invisible but enormously strong closing your throat. Trapping effects: it is invisible and ignores any type of armor, but can be resisted with an opposed Spirit roll.
Ancient Keronian Wand. This invocation requires an ancient Keronian Wand like the ones found in some tombs. Wielding such an item and knowing the right words, you can unleash terrible rays of crawling darkness. Spell deals +1 damage and is +1 to hit roll, but to use it you need to find a wand or a tome explaining how to craft one... |

This sounds all the time better and better definitely something I can't miss, especially as it's very close to Borderlands & my campaign's main area
Btw, can you say anything about when this will come out? I think it'll be 3-4 months before I actually start needing it. _________________

I could, but Piotr would send leathery winged demons to my house, so I prefer to avoid... let's say "when it is ready" (or ask him ). |

And there's another trapping for Bolt... the sorcerer conjures up little leathery winged demons that shriek and tear at his enemy's flesh!
And to borrow from the original Conan movie, as a trapping for Bolt you could have a sorcerer turn snakes rigid and fire them from a bow like an arrow. The damage comes from the snake as well as its poison.
A trapping for Blast could be 'fire from the sky' as the sorcerer rains down the wrath of ancient and evil gods. _________________ 'But I don't want to go among mad people,' Alice remarked.
'Oh, you can't help that,' said the Cat: 'we're all mad here.'

[Ears prick up]
Jalizar, City of Thieves, you say? Perfect, I had already planned to move my PCs there in a few adventures... _________________ Andy
