In 50F a Medicine Chest costs $1,200 and consists of the chest itself and 10 doses of medicine which cost $50 each (total value $500).

A quick calculation shows that the chest itself must be worth $700. Why? If the only way to get the medicine was to buy the chest then it might be understandable but since you can buy the medicine seperately (to restock) why not buy a cheap chest and fill it yourself?

(Surprisingly there is no costs given for Barrels or Chests in either SWD or 50F, but that is another matter)

My solution ... all Medical Chests are only given to those who can prove that they are doctors. Therefore, having a Medical Chest is a sign that the person with the chest is a doctor and so people with injuries etc. will come to them for help. i.e. the chest is the equivalent of a certificate that proves they are compentant. The cost of the chest is therefore set extra high so only true doctors will buy it.

Remember, you get +2 on your disease healing rolls too!

As mentioned in the description diseases are plenty on Caribdus, as medicine is rare. So such chests are in great demand and expensive.

Without reading the description I would say that it isnt simply a chest, but a lot of non-consumed medical tools like different scalpels, forceps, needle, a bone saw and such things.

If the medicine are used up it isnt totally worthless, it simply counts as "medical care" for healing times.

Yes, this. Consider the medical chest to provide the "proper supplies" for making healing checks. Without one, the healer is at -2 to all Healing checks ... AND he still needs to track the medicine he uses. Fun!

Following the description, it has to be replenished to be of any use...

As it is for healing diseases only, i doubt that it includes more than the basic tools. I think it includes a few tomes about diseases and the procedures and receipts to heal them...

I've only just purchased 50 Fathoms so dunno for sure but wouldn't most characters be pretty rich in this game anyways? What with all the boating from place to place and trading and all that. Smile

Because the chest has more than just medicine in it; the medicine is just the only consumable part that has to be replaced. The rest of the chest contains medical equipment designed for treating diseases and working with the various medicines (like mortar and pestle, other vials for mixing, etc.), so it takes both the equipment and the medicine to gain any benefit.

Make sense?

Hey, I like that idea! Suggests a couple of plot lines based around finding rare ingredients to cure an unusual affliction.

That was my general idea. Even if it says that it costs only 50 gp to restock the ingredients, it doesn't say that all are commonly available, nor easy to get or already processed.

I thought more about very rare plant on a forlorn island, yet your idea sounds even better. Twisted Evil

Generally i see some items as ideal plot devices for the GM.

I think it looks more like this one here, used by Lewis and Clark:

Follow the link and scroll down for a list of its ingredients Wink

Thanks for all the replies.

This question was raised by one of my players (I am currently GMing 50F) so now I can show him this thread and get him to hand over his money.

you need to have the human party visit a Scrullian doctor. The human patient has a minor wound on the arm and the doctor keeps snapping his claws sawing “Don't worry I'll cut your off tentacle right here and it will grow back in a few months”

it just came to mind that in the Asian influences areas they would have a medical chest for travel in the form of a wooden box with drawers that is worn on the back. I had a Mushroom Man Monk that had one full of spices for his cooking

You might have seen them in kung foo movies, the wondering wise man has it full of herbs.

Wiki on Japanese cabinetry

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tansu

Kusuri-dansu : They were apothecary chests with many small drawers to contain medicinal herbs. Because the chests/boxes often needed to be carried by itinerant salesmen, they were often constructed of light weight Kiri

With one of these if any of the NPC or followers looses one or more hands or arm they can still hang back and carry the medical supplies
