Hi, all; sort of a very specific game design question, but is there a default assumption in terms of the ammo type used to figure the damage and AP values for the guns in the basic table? Reason I'm asking is I'm working on a conversion for existing weapons based on either GURPS stats or the RHS penetration and using the 2.5 Armor = 1 inch RHS metric from the Vehicle notes. It turns out these are equivalent (20d of GURPS damage is 1" RHS penetration, nicely, so conveniently you can divide GURPS damage by 8 and get the AP equivalent).
As fate would have it, this actually works really well, excepting there's kind of a funky discontinuity with .50 BMG in particular, which is unfortnate given i'm using its damage and AP as the default offset for heavy weapons. Basically, I've been assuming ball rounds were used in the table, but .50BMG ball has a penetration somewhere around 1/2 or 5/8 inch RHS depending on source, suggesting that its AP is actually too high as written; while I realize this is to account for personal armor penetration, it screws up the math. I've been taking 3 +/- 2.5 * RHS as the baseline AP value and 12 + the same value as the average damage (then broken down into appropriate dice); however, the offset does make some rounds have a higher AP than I'd expect given the table. However, if the default assumption for .50 cal is an AP round or something like the Raufoss round (http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=2&ved=0CFUQFjAB&url=http%3A%2F%2Fguns.wikia.com%2Fwiki%2FRaufoss_Mk_211&ei=4-fYT9e0I4qN6QHgzoSvAw&usg=AFQjCNFy56ZjzKi9SoAUdqFqEnDIQgMC5w&sig2=RNtJdAVjRz1YIPCHC5SJOw), which has a penetration on the order of 2 inches, the numbers work out very similar to the existing table (give or take). So in that case I would assume the listed damage is from an AP type round and downgrade .50 BMG to AP 2.
Which is what I would assume as well; the difficulty is that the stated numbers line up a lot better with the specialty ammo then they do the standard round, so I'm wondering if at least in this case they used the specialty ammo.
