I've already mentioned this on A.o.O forum, but I thought here as well to reach more maybe?
I think you do need a handling stat for Vehicles, +/- to your roll.
Also the groups are a bit broad, i.e. sports car cover every thing from a Audi Ty up to the Bugatti Veyron. Don't think it would be a long race! |

I tend to give handling bonuses to smaller, more agile vehicles, and penalties to huge, ponderous trucks/ big rigs etc... _________________ "Anything smaller is just fiddly, and fiddly is not one of SvgW's three Fs..." |

Not sure I really like a "handling bonus/penalty" While I get the concept, it makes it so that its easier to drive a top of the line sports car than it is to drive a Big Rig. Both take skill to drive.
One option is to tweak the turning template (table top) from the back of the book. Its set at a 45 angle, you could have that be standard, a 30 being substandard, and a 60 being superb handling. _________________ Aperture Science:

I like your idea too, but you might use a bonus as a penalty until it's worked off in time or practice. But remember, we're Heroes, we can use a nunchacku or bullwhip as easily as a baseball bat...
(or a fly rod, for that matter... ouch...)
I'd kinda like to add an "unfamiliarity" rule, but I don't want to stray too far from FFF.

Well yes I would assume all things been equal, when a top of the line sports car & a big rig hit a series of bends I'd say the sports car has the advantage! |

Haven't done vehicles in my game yet (it's fantasy), but I feel like handling should be a factor at least some of the time. Maybe it doesn't need to be a vehicle stat in all campaigns, but it's good enough to eyeball it.
You could certainly have a "handling" rating for a vehicle, with the understanding that you only use it when handling is an issue. Acceleration and deceleration might not be affected, but turning would. In a chase situation, the gm would decide whether the situation called for it, or maybe the fleeing vehicle could use its superior handling to do things like take tight turns to evade the pursuing vehicle, in which case, the player would bring the handling issue into the situation. |

Handling appears as a stat in most settings where vehicles are a big part of the action, including 50 Fathoms and Slipstream. IMO, it should really be a part of core, along with Cargo space. If watching Top Gear has taught me nothing else, it's that some cars are just plain better at handling turns than others, and that should be reflected in a vehicle's stats. _________________ "Your GM is metagaming ... and wrong!" |
