I like the idea of sending a target...elsewhere... for a period of time. I also see little use in my games for Banish as written.

So I was thinking of making it work approximately the same but

Works on any sort of target (targets without will cannot resist)

Targets add/subtract their size to the Arcane skill check.

Never causes wounds.

Each raise results in the target going somewhere else for one round per. Say a pocket dimension from where they can see events unfold or maybe just slightly out of phase, thus justifying their immediate inclusion in the fight as soon as they get back.

Sensible or not?

I'm amused by the idea of a wizard porting a locked door out of his way - only to have it reappear behind him six seconds later.

The HERO system has a version of this power. It has a "stop sign" icon on the page next to the power description, which in HERO language means "You will want to seriously consider how this power works, and whether to allow a PC to have it in your game."

* The Aportation power, in HERO is for moving people to other locations in combat, which is mostly just kind of frustrating, but also has the same problem as using TK- you can move them off the sides of cliffs, etc. This doesn't apply to your version, so maybe not so bad.

* It takes them completely out of combat, but only for a short amount of time, which happens all the time with shaken combatants. In fact, I assume they're immune to being hurt while in this extra-dimensional space, so maybe not so bad.

* Banish is actually only meant to work on certain creatures, which the GM will know about when he puts them into a combat with a PC who has Banish. If this works on everyone, then that's a little worse.

* I'd look at how powers that leave characters stunned or shaken for a while and maybe consider changing the trappings on one of those to say the character is in another dimension until they are no longer shaken. Having duration based on the roll might not be so bad either, as long as it's comparable to a typical shaken duration.

That's what I think.
