Red Sands came out before Savage Worlds Deluxe, and one of the Setting Rules I really like in SWD is Skill Specializations. I'm thinking about using them in my upcoming 1889 campaign, so here's the list I came up with. They are based on the "Cascade Skills" of the original version of the game, with a few of my own added in.

My main question is: Am I getting too fine in detail with these?

Boating: Exotic Vehicle (by type, such as hydrofoil, submarine, etc.), Sailing Vessel, Steam Vessel, Submarine

Driving: Automobile, Carriage/Wagon, Chariot, Exotic Vehicle (by type, such as mole drill, tripod, etc.), Heavy Machinery, Powered Bicycle

Fighting: Axes, Blades, Exotic Weaponry (by type), Pole Arms, Blunt

*Knowledge (Engineering): Earthworks, Explosives, Naval Architecture, Structural Engineering

Knowledge (History): Archaeology, Culture/Nation/Region (by type)

*Knowledge (Mechanics): Electricity, Machinist, Steam

Knowledge (Medicine): Earth Animal, Human, Martian, Martian Animal, Venusian, Venusian Animal

Knowledge (Navigation): Air, Ether, Land, Sea

*Knowledge (Science): Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Physics

Knowledge (Trimsman): Aerial Flyer, Cloudship

Piloting: Aerial Flyer, Cloudship, Interplanetary Ether Flyer, Exotic Vehicle (by type, such as autogyro, personal conveyor, etc.), Zeppelin

Riding: Camel, Elephant, Exotic Animal (by type), Flying Skrill, Gashant, Horse, Pacyosaurus, Ruumet Breehr

Shooting: Bow, Cannon (includes breech- and muzzle-loading), Crossbow, Exotic Weaponry (by type), Machinegun/Rotary Cannon, Pistol, Rifle (includes carbines and shotguns)

Stealth: Pickpocket, Sneaking

Throwing: Boomerang, Exotic Weaponry (by type), Grenade, Knife

*For the purposes of Inventing rolls, your specialization doesn’t matter. These skills work as described in the rules for Inventions.

I haven't seen the Skill Specialties in SWD yet. Please tell me they are something other than a +2 bonus or some-such.

Various skills (shooting, fighting, driving, etc) are broken up into subcategories. The character gets 1 category for free, and rolls at no penalty - all other categories are rolled at -2.
Additional categories can be acquired for 1 skill point.

Right, so if you have Fighting (blades) and pick up a mace, you'd be at -2 to your Fighting roll unless you also had the (blunt) specialization.

It's a way to add a little more detail to certain skills without having to add a different skill for each type of weapon or vehicle or whatever.

Sorta... a specialization is treated as a Skill below its Attribute die. Thus, with one Advancement you could get two new specializations or one new specialization and also increase another skill that's below its Attribute die.

They're 1 skill point at character creation, as well. Which doesn't contradict, merely supplement what you just said. Very Happy
