Hey Everyone,

I have always loved Deadlands Reloaded. I wanted to expand upon it using the lore in a slightly different setting, but I was curious if there was an official background settings for what is occurring in the rest of the world because of the events in America, specifically Europe.

I joined my DLR games with Rippers to get a wider-world setting. The dates aren't perfect, but you can push DLR forward about 10 years and rewind Rippers back about 10 years and have them intersect nicely (Ripper-tech can fit in nicely with ghost rock technology too with some finagling).

Not really - there are hints here and there but no real information. Europe is a strange but unexplored playground (there's lots of stuff going on there, but none of it gets any detail). Though you might want to ask again in the Deadlands forum, just in case I've overlooked something in an existing book.

This holds true for pretty much the rest of the world. There's lots of supernatural stuff going on world wide, especially focused in war zones, but not a lot of details in the various PEG products.*

While there is somestuff going on throughout the world, the reckoners are focusing heavily on the US. (Its where all their "big bads" are located after all.)

That being said, you can probably do some interpreting to figure out how the rest of the world is doing.

High Population areas, like Western Europe are probably finding themselves facing situations similar to what's happening in "Back East" supplaments. Political Intrigue, isolation amongst people, unsolved crimes, etc.

Sparsely populated or rural areas are probably having to deal with the local folklore of what "goes bump in the night". So, places like ireland is dealing with "Banshee's" and "bad fey" type creatures. Vampires are probably a problem in eastern europe, etc.

You can probably expect that old rivals and enemies are in a state of heightened tension, where war could POSSIBLY break out at any time, but oddly doesn't. England/France etc.

Thats my .02 anyways.

Alright, well the reason I was asking is because I read a comment dated a couple years ago about Deadlands in Africa. I was VERY intrigued and, considering the European colonization of the continent, was wondering how the events in American would have effected Europes involvement in Africa. I wanted to incorporate Livington's findings with Henry Stanley's expeditions. Maybe they found some Ghost Rock in the Congo and there is a 'Scramble' for European countries to be the first one to actually locate and collect it to prosper their nation. Of course, tracking through a wilderness which wants to kill you will be difficult.

On a slightly related topic . . . I have listed a number of weapons from Britain and France that would have been used at the time. Is there already a list of stats for things like that?

EDIT: I mean, just the idea that when Livington died the locals carved out his heart because "His heart belong to Africa" definitely has some potential for an interesting story.

This is a great idea. I think it's one of those ideas that's so great it causes everyone to exclaim, "Why didn't I think of that?"
Do you have a conversion written up, or is it unnecessary and they work together well without a lot of changes? (besides the timing and the rippertech)

I thought that the Rippers timeline was early 19th century. I guess I was wrong though, looks to be more like 1890s? That seems like a good starting place. I look more into it. Thanks.

I'm about three or four sessions in on running a Deadlands adaptation of Masks of Nyarlathotep, which is a world-traveling campaign, so I've put a bit of thought into what's going on in the rest of the world. The Masons will be sort of the glue that holds everything together for my game; the antagonist learned some ancient secrets that the Masons have been keeping from the world at large that led him on his quest.

London is going to be heavily steampunk, which a large section of "occultist" types - the spiritualist movement was going on throughout most English-speaking countries, and a lot of its founders were in England around the time of Deadlands. Awareness of the occult at the time is pretty high; there are a lot of political plots you could do with agents of the various magical societies running around England at this time, considering that a number of them would pick up spiritual abilities. I'm planning on using the Horror Companion Summon and Bind spells to represent this type of magic - they bind spirits to their will and force them into service to do things.

I'll probably include a side trek or two around the United Kingdom, likely to some northern moorland and a quick side trip to Ireland.

The moorlands will be heavily Gothic in flavor - one of the PCs is a British lord (well, kind of. He's the vengeance-seeking servant-turned-heir of a murdered lord who took his identity to help figure out who murdered his boss). His estate is in a poorly-defined location in north-central England, near the Scottish border.

Ireland will be starting to fight for its independence thirty or forty years early, with a third party in the wars between the Protestants and the Catholics - the Irish that have returned to the old ways of the druids and the fey. The druids will be bloody and violent, not at all the nature-loving hippies they're currently depicted as - I'm going to go back to the Roman descriptions and ignore the fact that they're propaganda. Nasty fey roam the wild lands, leaving changelings and murdering travelers.

There will be a stop in south-central France that will deal with the resurrected Beast of Gevaudan, a mysterious wolf-like monster that killed quite a number of people in the 18th century. France in the time period was a bit of a mess, not having much luck pulling itself back together after the Napoleonic Wars (and all the associated conflicts afterward). Lots of different parties were vying for power, and in my game some of them will be turning to British steam weapons and some of them will be turning to other possible power sources (black magic and the Catholic church).

One of the characters was educated in Germany - there's going to be a sizable "mad doctor" vibe to the University of Vienna. Frankenstein-type alchemical creations will be involved (one of the PCs is one, and they've already discovered that she has "duplicates" out there). In the end they'll link to an older alchemical tradition from Egypt.

Egypt will be pretty crazy. The Egyptian gods have returned, some as abominations trying to spread fear and a few more benevolent spirits trying to keep everything from going haywire. Conflicts between the British, the Muslims, and the followers of the Old Gods will be kinda nuts, with the British trying to roll in with steam weapons and crush opposition while dealing with a population that doesn't know what religion to believe in any more. Cultists trying to unleash bound spirits from beneath the pyramids and reawaken an ancient alchemist-lich will not help matters.

I haven't decided if I'm going to include another stop in the Middle East involving djinn, ifrit, and the location of lost Irem, the City of Pillars. It's tempting, but I'm not sure I want to take the time. It would mostly just be a chance to tie in to the backstory of the setting changes I'm making, where a number of ancient cities were founded by the scattered remnants of Atlantis - Irem would have been the location where those exiled for black magic settled.

Similarly, I kind of want to include something about Baba Yaga in Russia, just not sure what I want to do there. It'd be interesting.

China will be under the theoretical rule of Empress Dowager Cixi, who is a great villain for Deadlands. I'm going to play her rather like Cersei from Game of Thrones - villainous, but sympathetic, as her only real concern is the safety of her family. In the period where real-life China was working toward modernization after nasty civil wars, in Deadlands these civil wars still rage on. Petty warlords are everywhere, and the natural order has gone mad, and dragons have been seen sowing terror in remote provinces. I'm going to borrow heavily from Bioware's Jade Empire game for most of China.

Australia was, in my game, where the Atlantean survivors most interested in exploring the Hunting Grounds ended up. They refer to it as the Dreaming, and the whole continent has a pretty close connection to the spirit world. Having a bad nightmare there can literally cause what you're dreaming about to appear and attack, not to mention the general nastiness of the territory. Lots of it is pretty similar to the Weird West - the conflicts with the natives have the same kind of theme as they do in the West, and the feel of the area is pretty similar.

Anyway, those are my thoughts and plans for the rest of the world. Hope somebody finds them interesting.

In France, The Channel Tunnel's project begin in Sangatte on 1874.
1876 they began to dig (drill?).
The project failed in 1883 because of money??? Oh come on, as if...

The French destabilized the government to get their puppet in control, the loyal officers for the previous President-for-Life all went into the jungle to make themselves headman, and the international community sent in "advisers" to ensure their chosen guy won the "election". Cyborg advisers were so effective that normal human troops absolutely could not compete. The ensuing three-year conflict only ended because the Ghost Rock ran out much earlier than anticipated.

Funny, this is exactly what I was planning on doing. Except that Livingstone found out about the Ghost Rock, told Henry Stanley when he visited him, and then sacrificed himself to try and find it. That's why the locals kept his heart, to seal it away (or maybe seal a portal to the Reckoners away).

I don't remember having to do any major conversions (campaign was a little while ago). I did something with ghost rock and alchemy being used to Rip, and incorporated Reason (from Rippers), but no one ever went down the Ripping path, so the rules never got fleshed out. I dropped Status, as that's more of the Victorian side of things and my posse never left the CSA.
