I need your advice.
Much to my surprise, my current group (of three players) are keen to give DL:R a try - a setting that I never thought I'd be able to sell them on.
Can anyone suggest an adventure to get us started? The players tend toward the crunchier end of the gamer spectrum (they just a love a killin'), and I'm looking forward to cranking up the weirdness.

The various One Sheets on Pinnacle's website. I like Envy a lot, but Lynched, Lover's Quarrel, House Call, and Daddy's Boy can all be very effective with a group like yours. When you want to throw them a curve, Buffalo Soldiers, Deep Dark Woods, Ghost Town, and Feast of Famine are good choices - straight violence is likely to fail. Silent Night, Hungry Night is good and deadly but also tongue-in-cheek - a real specialty of the Deadlands authors.
After that, Saddle Sore is a wonderful compilation of various adventures. Most can easily adapt to whatever you're doing. And that leaves the two Plot Point campaigns for extended fun.
The Flood is good, but centered on the Great Maze (not everyone likes that place). Last Sons is very good, but focused on dealing with the Indian nations (specifically the Coyote Confederation) - again, not everyone will enjoy that.
Both books have a ton of expanded content to play with (savage tales + adventure generators + new monsters), so either one will give you your money's worth.
Some of the stuff from the days of Classic is amazing. If you're willing to invest in the old pdfs, and the effort of translating it to Reloaded, then you'll find some real gems to play with.
And don't be afraid to make up your own adventures. Those can be incredibly fun.

I'm happy to convert stuff if it's good. Can you suggest anything from Classic that I should check out?

The Classic adventures are, largely, a heck of a lot of fun. If a Marshal is willing to do the work, there are only a handful of Classic adventures that aren't worth the price.
The only real trick is tweaking the stories to fit with your own campaign - those old adventures have pages and pages of background, set up, and environment that are incredible and inspiring, but are also limiting. There's so much good story stuff that you are reluctant to change it to fit your own tale.
The Dime Novels, the four Epitaphs (each of which holds three to six adventures), the separate adventure products, and the adventures in the backs of many of the supplement books, are the Classic adventures I've come across.
The Heart of Darkness trilogy is either totally awesome or a waste of time, depending upon the Marshal you talk to. It's got a very firm story, takes place in 1877, can completely change your campaign (transitioning into Hell On Earth), and might blow up all of the original posse (hopefully piecemeal, rather than TPK). _________________ "Got a problem? if you're not averse to a little tinkering then I suggest using the Wild Hunt as an intro Deadlands adventure. The Wild Hunt was a one shot adventure given away at the last Free RPG Day.

In the Conversions forum, I posted conversions for the pregens geared for a Deadlands game. Look for Deadlands: The Wild Hunt.
I'm in the process of kicking off not one, but two play by post games using it as the starting adventure. Thus far I think it will work really well. |

It's nowhere near as involved as ToH, however the party faces a bunch of nasty bad guys and if they're not prepared they will die ignomy...ignomm...ig..... a lot.

Most of that preparation being in how they choose to act, about 70% of players are going to lose a character.
Night Train throws ~50 or 60 "nose ferrets" at the posse. Handled intelligently, it will seem like a cakewalk. Just a couple of mistakes, however, will get the entire posse eaten - and may bring them back as monsters to kill their replacement characters.  _________________ "Got a problem? Thanks for all the suggestions.
Kendermage: I read through The Wild Hunt when it was first released, and there'a a lot in there to like (there usually is from John Goff). I must admit, it didn't occur to me to reskin it for DLR, but I'll have to take another look now (and check out your conversions).
Night Train, eh? I ran ToH as our first ever SW session, and we all enjoyed it. I've read that this has been 'reloaded' as a Savage Tale in The Last Sons. Anyone read through/played both versions for comparison? _________________ the cake is a lie |
