I created a character in Hero Lab to use for an upcoming Fantasy Grounds II 50 Fathoms campaign I'll be playing in. Can someone please check my work and make sure the character is legal for the 50 Fathoms setting?

Thanks so much in advance!

Looks good to me, assuming you took one Major and two Minor Hindrances. I think some of those can be taken as either/or.

EDIT: Though I might recommend a Main Gauche in his off-hand for the +1 Parry. They have those in 50 Fathoms, right?

I don't know 50 Fathoms, so maybe you get free Knowledge skills, but it looks off to me.

I am assuming only one of the hindrances is taken as Major and the other two are Minor, the limit per the rules. I'm guessing Enemy is the major one Major. (Aside: Wanted (Piracy) in a pirate game seems really, very Minor to me).

I count 5 +1 for Attributes,
15 +2 for Skill points: Boating 2, Fighting 5, Intimidation 2, Notice 1, Shooting 3, Stealth 2, Knowledge (Masaquani) 2, and
1 +1 for Edges.

That is one too many by my count.

Everyone in the setting gets Knowledge (Masaquani) for free. In addition, for this setting every character is given one edge at seasoned to begin play. It is NOT free. You must meet all the other requirements for the edge. I took Block for this.

I took one major (Wanted: Piracy) and 2 minor hindrances (the other two). As for Wanted (Piracy) seeming very minor to you it is not a given that every character is a pirate or is wanted. To have a price on your head or be wanted in most foreign ports can be a big obstacle.

I do not see Main Gauches listed in the 50 Fathoms book PDF.

Yep, you're legal.

However, Block isn't really the best choice at lower levels. You might be better off using those two Hindrance points for Skill points instead, and getting Fighting d12. That gives you the same Parry and a better hit chance.

Even that's overkill for a Novice though, IME. I usually don't have Novice characters have any Skill higher than d8, so you can spread the Skill Points a little further, but YMMV.

Like I said, I don't know 50 Fathoms, so sounds good!

As for my comment on Wanted (Piracy), looking back I look a little more critical than I intended. I apologize for that. I just assumed all the characters would be pirates. I totally agree that being wanted in most ports could be a major hindrance.

Along the same lines, it is a good thing you put a couple of Skill points in Stealth! Smile

I just assumed that Block for the +1 Parry and using a Rapier for another +1 Parry would be a great boon for a novice character since the setting allows me to take a seasoned edge as long as I meet the other requirements.

Would you like to rework my points a bit from my one major and 2 minor hindrances to show me what you think would work better? I'm new to playing Savage Worlds, having owned a lot of the books for years but just now getting ready to actually play in a game. I'd greatly appreciate any help I can get for making an awesome 50 Fathoms pirate character. I'd love to have Fighting at d12 but not sure how to go about it since I think I'm maxed already for points expenditures.

I want to be good at 3 things:

1) Fighting for melee brawls and sword duels

2) Boating....any pirate worth his/her salt should be good at this

3) a good Shooting skill for using pistols when needed.

Yikes! No pirate should be without that! /adding it now.

Now, if I can just catch me a cool parrot. I will try to avoid getting an eye patch or peg leg though, lol.

I don't think it's bad, but there are other choices that might prove more useful earlier on, particularly as you've already got decent Parry score. I'd actually favour Dodge over Block.

But my personal choice would probably be Combat Reflexes for a melee focus, or perhaps Marksman if I were focusing more on pistols. Or if you don't mind taking a Novice Edge, Two-Fisted (rapier and pistol at the same time!) or Quick would work well.

I wouldn't worry about it during character creation, you can increase it later with an advance.

Personally I'd have left Fighting at d8 and added a couple more skills at d4 (as they'll cost a full advance to buy at d4 later on). Swimming perhaps, or Climbing (so you can climb up the rigging to use your acrobatics). Streetwise could be pretty useful for gathering information from ports, particularly as you've got so many people looking for you!
