SIMCON, held at the University of Rochester, is coming up in a little over a month. They finally nailed the date down, though it still shows last year's date in the welcome section of their web page.

http://www.simcon.org/

While this Con is not as popular (or more specifically, as well organized) as other Con's in the area, it can still be a lot of fun when the Savages show up. I'll be there, running Savage Worlds events, as will as a few others.

Hope to see you there!

What other cons are held in the area now? I haven't lived in Rochester since 1992 and I was a regular SimCon attendee as a teen.

I meant in the Greater Area, not just Rochester.

- RunningGAGG in Geneseo
- UBCon in Buffalo
- SIMCON in Rochester
- RUDICON in Rochester
- ARCON in Oswego

There are also some smaller ones, usually in Buffalo (Tim already listed one this fall in this Forum).

RunningGAGG and UBCON are the main ones to attend. Plenty of Savage Worlds, as well as others systems/games you might want to try.

SIMCON (UofR) only seems good when a bunch of Savages show up. I rarely find anything I want to play, so I run a number of games.

I made it to RUDICON (RIT) two years ago, but it was lame and they don't really publicize it. I ran three SW adventures, but the only ones to sign up for any of them were my son and his friends. I signed up, along with 4 others, to play CoC, but the GM never showed up. This past year, as well as three years ago, I found out about Con date, after the fact.

I have never attended ARCON, so I can't say much about it. Maybe this year?

Metagame has been decent when I've played it the last couple years, there's often a Paranoia game at some point, and then there's Amputheatre, if you're into that kind of mayhem.

As for Savage Worlds, I still need to figure out what I'm running, in among all the other stuff I have going on.

If SIMCON does half-length timeslots again, will we be coordinating here to avoid overlap?

SIMCON Event registration is now open ... at last. I have not taken a close look at how they have things set up, time slot wise, but they usually do two hour slots.

I don't know if there will be enough of us there to coordinate. I suggest posting your events here as the best way to do it.

I planned on running three events ... but Committee just moved our Boy Scout Spaghetti supper fund raiser to the same weekend. ARGH! Three years in a row now. And the group of high school kids (my son and his friends) I always bring with me are all Scouts. Scheduling will once again be interesting.

Ugh!! Event registration for SIMCON. You can enter the day you would like to run an event, and for how many hours. They then pick the time slot, based on the schedule.

Even worse, you can already sign up for events as a player, even though you have no idea what day/time the event will be.

No way to coordinate anything here.

SIMCON has updated their event scheduling so that you can now pick your timeslot(s). I'd like to see a few more events posted, especially for Savage Worlds.

When registering for a game, you now can see when it is being run. Big improvement over earlier.

Given the other things going on in my life of late, I didn't get anything prepared, and anything I could run off the cuff/with little preparation was already run at SIMCON last year.

Anyway, I think I'll see what Savage Worlds stuff is available and take some time to do a little bit of comparison with other systems.

Well, it's officially over ... and I'm pretty tired. I was the only one running registered Savage Worlds events, thought there was a Deadlands game run Saturday night.

SIMCON was "interesting" ... more so than usual. New location, not as good, but the best they could do. I had told them I didn't want a classroom and would rather be more in the open where folks could see. The Balcony from past years was fine before I knew they had moved things.

I got an email late Friday afternoon, telling me things were all set. I could meet my players in the Atrium and from there, take them outside. Outside?!? Well, I guess that's certainly in the open, though not what I meant. Especially since there was rain, snow and other bad weather this weekend. They did get it all straightened out, and I was in a nice location at the back of the Atrium (external noise only coming from one direction).

At registration, I found out that I had to pay full price. Okay ... so I'm putting in 12+ hours of gaming events for their CON, and I have to pay to do it? Granted I did play in two other events. Apparently, only URSGA (University of Rochester Simulation Gaming Association) members got in free if they were running an event. I was not happy, but since I was there and had already put the effort in, I went with it, thinking I would not be back next year, other than a player IF there were any interesting events ... and there are not a lot.

Saturday morning, the Con Director came over to my table and reimbursed me for the event. Guess they decided that you got in free if you ran three events. I suspect they got complaints from other people running events.

Regardless, for not being very well organized up front, they pulled off a fairly good Con ... though I think it's getting smaller again. Both my teenage kids and one of my son's friends attended, and all had a good time.

Best part was when a friend told me that he enjoyed playing Savage Worlds adventures, but with the system as it is, he never felt his character was ever in any real danger. The event I ran today ("Deadly Coins," a Pulp adventure, some of you have played) went right down to the wire. The players were out of bennies slightly before I was, and the one who made the comment was at two wounds as was another player, when they managed to finish the adventure. Not that I tried, it's just how the dice rolled. Anyway, he decided that Savage Worlds was a little more deadly than he first thought.
