Another thing I do is use the Cone template for Shotguns. It just made sense to me one day. _________________ "Anything smaller is just fiddly, and fiddly is not one of SvgW's three Fs..." |

My approach to new firearms is this. They'll still tend to make the same size hole so keep the damage the same.
What they will do is better AP, more rounds, better range, and lighter weight (as has been pointed out earlier). _________________ My Savage Worlds Blog

I am no gun expert, but there are a few cool bits of gun technology in development today.
For example: check out http://www.popularmechanics.com/technology/military/weapons/4273222
Highlights:
* A rifle with changeable barrels, allowing it to be converted from sniper rifle to assault rifle or carbine in a matter of minutes
* A modified "grenade launcher" with computer-assisted guidance that can be programmed to detonate at a specific time, e.x. immediately inside a sniper's window or directly above the heads of a group of enemies hiding behind a barricade.
* A rifle that uses an angled barrel and a mounted video camera to shoot around corners.
* Bullpup designs that dramatically reduce muzzle climb on automatic weapons.
Furthermore, PDW-class firearms are becoming more prevalent - they are about the same size as SMGs, but are semi or full automatic and fire rifle rounds. Which sounds to me like a ROF 3, 2D8, AP 2 automatic than you can fire in melee range. |

Yep!
Now here's an interesting idea: WHAT IF guns that the time travelers take into the past are simply equipped to take all ammunition from that era, gaining the particular abilities of certain kinds of ammo (damage, AP, special abilities like shotgun spread)? The range only changes a little bit between bullet types, and these future guns will hold a lot more pistol ammo than larger ammunition, but with maybe a few minutes swapping components they can take on the characteristics of almost any chemically-fired gun? _________________ Proud Savagepedia contributor.

Voice commanded fire modes?
"Single Shot"
"Full Auto"
"Double Whammie"
Judge Dredd anyone?
I agree with the same hole size = same damage. And the AP, more rounds, less recoil, better range, faster rate of fire, less weight, etc...

It sounds interesting and all... but how exactly do you make that work? I am not sure if I am comfortable with the idea of a shotgun replacing flamethrowers. True, shotgun pellets do spread out, but I believe they do so over quite a longer distance than the Cone template represents.
Savage Suzerain kinda covers the time travel antics. When time travelling, time itself recognizes you as an 'intruder' if you are away from your own time, and attempts to as good as possible minimize the impact of your visit. Especially big problems such as bringing futuristic weapons into ancient times or trying to alter nexus points are dealt with adequately (up to the GM's creativity). |

I just thought of this...
Has anyone recommended looking at this?
http://www.savageheroes.com/conversions/Modern%20Weapons%20v1.pdf
Warning - it goes straight to a PDF of ballistics and firearm weaponry for an older edition of Savage Worlds.
It might prove helpful & insightful. _________________

Fair enough. Allow me to reply!
While using the cone template for both shotguns and flamethrowers may seem a little sacreligious, you have to remember that;
a) They have different levels of damage. ( 1-3d6 for shotties, as opposed to 2d10 for flame throwers)
b)Flamethrowers ignore armor. (As per the rules on pg 55 SWD)
c)Flamethrowers set things on fire, unlike shotguns.
I realize that this isn't for everyone, but it suits me and my squad of gamies. I'm always looking for ways to keep it FFF without breaking the game rules and feel too much, and this just felt really groovey to me. Just like my altered ranges and simplified weapons listing, all in the effort to keeps thangs FFF!!!
Thanx,

You could also use the spread of a shotgun in a different way.
- You can hit 1 target at close range for 3d6
- You can hit 2 adjacent targets at medium range for 2d6 each
- You can hit 3 adjacent targets at long range for 1d6 each
This boosts medium range quite a bit though XD.
All in all, with all the input I have had it is about time to finish up this gear section. Now to decide whether I am going to come up with all kinds of new gun names, or just go for things like "normal pistol", "heavy pistol", "sniper rifle" etc.
btw... what is up with the default guns list? Was it written up by a gun fanatic? It seems pointlessly long to me, to the point where you can even find several guns that have exactly the same stats and are only priced differently.... It's one section of the book that seems to go against FFF; it is very confusing for people who are not familiar with, and not interested in, all the kinds of different guns that exist. |

Guns are like any other product. There are a lot of them that have only minor differences of styling, brand name, and price. The firearms table showcases that indirectly by presenting some of the better-known guns from various erras.
If you absolutely don't care about make and model, then just grab one that looks "generic" and move on. _________________ "Got a problem? I've got the solution: Rocket Launcher."

Still though, we do not see other weapon types get the same treatment. Where is the claymore, the zweihänder, the wakizashi, the kodashi etc.? They are nicely wrapped up in the standard categories. (With the exception of the katana, but that is a whole different story... I prefer to ignore that line in the weapon listing).
In my opinion, the same practice should have been applied to the modern guns section, which is by far the longest equipment list in the book. Do we really need 9 different pistols and 10 different machine guns (the worst offenders in the list). |

No, we need more. You can never have enough machine guns.
But, PEG chooses to leave that to setting rules. _________________ "Got a problem? I've got the solution: Rocket Launcher."

One interesting feature from Gurps Ultratech I remember is that laser sights are considered quite common (perhaps ones invisible to eye but can be seen when using a scope), but are often turned away as military suits have sensors that warn if you're being targeted by a laser. _________________

I never liked the concept of weapons getting deadlier, merely easier to use. A sword swipe (2d8 damage) is just as deadly as a rifle round (2d8 damage). Rifles just happen to be easier to use, work at range, and they penetrate old fashioned armor really well.
A newer weapon might have some kind of gyro stabilization or flux capacitor to help with aim, but I'd only treat this as the baseline for shooting. Trying to use an ancient firearm without this technology incurs a -1 or -2 instead. |
