I am going to run a game of Gaslight Savage Worlds at Valleycon in Fargo October 21-23. I need to make pregen characters of famous Victorian sidekicks for the game. However, I have a confession. I have a hard time creating characters for Savage Worlds. Sure, I spent years playing GURPS and using a point-buy system to make characters, but for some reason I am having trouble making SW characters.

That being the case, I come here asking for some assistance and to announce a contest, of sorts. I need help making those pregen characters. I am trying to make Novice level (with 10 experience points) versions of Dr. John Watson, Ned Land (from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea), Edward Malone (The Lost World), Wilhelmina Harker (Dracula), Rebecca "Becky" Thatcher (The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, et al.), and at least 3 others.

The characters would be part of the secret organization MI-7, based in London in the year 1888. No knowledge of the Gaslight setting is needed, but it would not hurt. Characters can be created using the Savage Worlds Deluxe rules, or the Gaslight rules if you have them.

If I pick one of your character writeups, you get a prize! The more of your writeups I use, the bigger the prize. Prizes will include, among other things, a signed copy of Gaslight for Savage Worlds. I need the writeups by next Thursday, October 20.

Questions? Don't hesitate to ask! Thanks for the help, and good luck!

I call dibs on writing up a profile for Jean Passspartout from Around the World in Eighty Days. I'll see if I can get something written up by tomorrow.

BTW what set of language rules does Gaslight use?

Sounds great! I look forward to seeing it.

It's quite simple. You get a number of languages equal to half your Smarts die. These do not count against your skill total.

I'm afraid I don't know much about those characters other than I saw them in movies once upon a time. I'm fairly familiar with Dracula, but aren't familiar with Wilhelmina Harker; was she a character in Stoker's original?

Would a R.M. Renfield (Dracula) character be of any interest to you - a gifted, low-powered psionist recently released from an insane asylum? Capable of communing with the occult, detecting vampires and possessing a taste for crunchy insects and our fine-feathered friends. Heck, he could have the ability to speak insect as one of his languages. Razz

She is known as Wilhelmina "Mina" Murray throughout most of the book. She is Harker's fiancee, and at the end of the book, after they are married, she has a child who represents hope for the future.

I would not mind giving it a review. Not sure how well it would go at a convention, but I may have some trusted players I can give that to.

And here it is.

Jean Passepartout
Traits: Agility d8, Smarts d6, Spirit d6, Strength d8, Vigor d8
Skills: Climbing d8, Fighting d8, Intimidation d6, Notice d6, Persuasion d6, Shooting d4, Stealth d6, Swimming d6
Hindrances: Big Mouth, Heroic, Loyal
Edges: Acrobat, Fleet-Footed
Pace: 8 Parry: 6/7 Toughness: 6 Charisma: 0
Languages: French (native), English

Now I'll show my work, so you can see that the math adds up to a character created by the rules with 10 XP. I took the standard one major and two minor Hindrances and spent them entirely on attributes. This made for Strength and Agility at d8 and all the others at d6. This means that the spread of skills you see here total up at fifteen points, as none of them exceed their linked attribute. Acrobat was taken as the free Edge. For the two Advances, I boosted Vigor a step and took the Fleet-Footed Edge.

Edit: Added Intimidation to take into account the free d6 skill in the Gaslight rules.

Thanks! He looks good. One of the things that Gaslight gives each race in the game are racial edges. Humans get a free edge and one skill at d6. So, what would you give him for a skill in this case? I have some thoughts, but I am curious to see what you think.

I realize that a lot of folks were at Con on the Cob this weekend, so they might not have seen this message. So this is a reminder that you still have a chance to get prizes for submitting characters for use at Valleycon this weekend. Check out the first post for details.

Having just re-read The Lost World, I felt like statting up Edward Malone for you.

Edward Dunn Malone
Traits: Agility d6, Smarts d8, Spirit d8, Strength d6, Vigor d6
Skills: Climbing d6, Fighting d6, Investigation d8, Knowledge (Journalism) d6, Notice d8, Shooting d6, Streetwise d8, Swimming d4
Hindrances: Code of Honor, Loyal
Edges: Investigator, Charismatic
Charisma: 2 Pace: 6 Parry: 5 Toughness: 5
Languages: English (native), Spanish

Notes on the build: The Code of Honor bought the d8 in Smarts, and Loyal bought an extra skill point. Notice d6 was the free d6 skill. Investigator was the free Edge for human. The 10 XP were used to raise Spirit to d8 and to buy the Charismatic Edge (Malone is a very likeable person).

Malone is an accomplished journalist with a knack for discovering things and getting people to like him even if they otherwise wouldn't be inclined to. He is a great rugby player (Fighting skill) and stands up for himself and others, but doesn't enjoy violence. His adventures with Professor Challenger in South America left him with a good understanding of Spanish and a curiosity about other secrets still hidden "out there".

While I was at it, I made up Ned Land as well.

Ned Land
Traits: Agility d8, Smarts d6, Spirit d6, Strength d8, Vigor d8
Skills: Boating d6, Climbing d6, Fighting d8, Intimidation d6, Shooting d6, Swimming d8, Throwing d10
Hindrances: Doubting Thomas, Overconfident, Stubborn
Edges: Brave
Charisma: 0 Pace: 6 Parry: 6 Toughness: 6
Languages: French (native), English

Notes on the build: The hindrances bought Strength and Agility to d8. Throwing was the free d6 skill. Brave was the free human Edge. The 10 XP were used to buy Throwing to d10 and Vigor to d8.

Ned Land is a French Canadian whaler and master harpooner. He is about 40 years old, over 6 feet tall, strongly built, grave and taciturn, occasionally violent and very passionate when contradicted. He still prefers the whaling harpoon as weapon of choice and never shirks an opportunity to show off his skill with it.

What the heck. One of my takes on post-Dracula Mina Harker.

Wilhelmina 'Mina' Harker
Traits: Agility d6, Smarts d6, Spirit d8, Strength d4, Vigor d6
Skills: Healing d8, Knowledge (Occult) d6, Notice d6, Persuasion d10, Shooting d6, Swimming d6, Taunt d6
Hindrances: Cautious, Loyal
Edges: Attractive, Healer, Hard to Kill
Charisma: 2 Pace: 6 Parry: 5 Toughness: 5
Languages: English (native), German

Notes on the build: Hindrances bought the Healer Edge. Attractive was the free human Edge. Healing was the free d6 skill. The 10 XP were used to buy the Hard to Kill Edge and raise Healing to d8.

After Mina's ordeal with Dracula, she found herself cleansed of the vampire's taint, but still changed. Injuries she suffered healed swiftly. She understood the nature of injury and illness somehow, and could help others recover quicker as well. She found herself able to influence people to help her much easier than before. She now serves the arts of medicine and diplomacy equally well.

I'll say put the free d6 in Intimidation.

From that, I'm thinking he should have gotten Brawny as well.

I had considered that. An alternate version of Ned would keep Throwing at d8 and use the xp to buy Brawny.

How's that? Mr. Green

Thanks for all the help so far folks, it's been great! There is still a chance to submit a character for prize consideration. I will be printing out the character sheets Thursday night before packing to leave Friday morning.

Again, thanks for all your assistance!

Regarding a Victorian sidekick from Dracula, I'd have thought that Dr. Seward would have been a more appropriate pick, as he strikes me as being the most sidekickish character in the book. Mina Harker is more of a damsel.

The reason her name was in the list was purely due to the fact she is female. I wanted to make sure I had female options for a convention game, especially since the steampunk genre attracts a lot of women as players.

you know, I thought I'd help by digging up some more female characters, but there is kind of a lack.

Moll Flanders is a bit early, but could be brought forward

I was thinking a survivor of Jack the ripper might work. According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_the_ripper#Other_alleged_victims, there are a number of alleged victims, some of whom lived.

My wife reads a series of mystery novels, one has Thomas Pitt and Charlotte (Ellison) PItt who solve crimes. She also wrote the William Monk books, in those the main character had a friend Hester Latterly, a Crimean War nurse.

I was going to suggest Annie Oakley, but she is real. Mattie Ross from the book True Grit might work.

Believe me, I know! Tough finding good fictional characters. I am trying to avoid modern fictional characters from the period, because this adventure is a prototype for one we plan on publishing.

Annie would be a good addition, now that I think of it. She mixes the real with the fictional to highlight that aspect of Gaslight.

Mattie Ross
29 year old women from Arkansas
Traits: Agility d6, Smarts d8, Spirit d8, Strength d6, Vigor d8
Skills: Fighting d6, Notice d6, Intimidation d6, Persuasion d8, Riding d6, Shooting d6, Streetwise d4, Survival d4, Stealth d4, Tracking d4
Hindrances: One Arm (missing left), Vengeful, Stubborn
Edges: Charismatic, Nerves of Steel
Pace: 6 Parry: 5 Toughness: 6 Charisma: +2
Languages: English, French, Latin, Chickasaw
Possessions: Colt Dragoon
Since losing her arm, Mattie has worked hard on her family farm. After an attempted robbery, she took it upon herself to learn how to defend herself (fighting skill).
Mattie came to London hunting yet another fugitive who hurt her family. She caught him, but in the ruckus a few laws were broken. "We don't take to frontier justice here, this is not your United States." and has to work off her debt.

Notes: started with Charismatic, raised vigor and bought Nerves of steel with experience

EDIT: forgot the free d6 skill
