|
|
Hello!
Have the original Deadlands & just recently have bought the new Reloaded SW's version & comparing the two, setting-wise, I've found out several differences.
Just out of curiosity, I wonder if you could kindly answer these conundrums:
I noticed the date change for the default campaign's start of 1876 moved to 1879. Any particular reason?
Also, the Pinkertons seem to have "vanished" - why?
Thanks a bunch!

When Reloaded was first released, 1879 is where the metaplot had gotten to. So, that's where Reloaded "begins."

The Pinkertons became the Agency in 1877 by order of President Grant. See The Agency: Men in Black Dusters. _________________ Matthew Cutter

1) Meta-plot. Stuff has happened, canonically, and the time line has advanced. You can ignore that if you'd like to, but the designers haven't.
2) They reformed into The Agency - the founding core members were mostly Pinkertons. But they are an actual (secret) branch of the U.S. Government.

I can't find the source to verify it, but I recall dimly that Shane said something to the effect of DLR being closer to the original vision for the Deadlands world. Makes some sense, DLC being compiled over years and years of different writers and creative teams, with DLR being compiled by a smaller cadre. _________________ Proud Savagepedia contributor.

Hi:
So, to annoy you more, what happened in the span between 1876 to 1879 (with spoilers, please, I'm a grownup, I can take it)?
Thanks!

Uh... the entire line of Classic Deadlands books happened.
To recount everything that happened, in detail, with spoilers, would be a pretty long post. _________________ Matthew Cutter

And the highlights are covered in Deadlands: Reloaded anyway. Where it talks about recent events, both in general and in the various regions of the west. _________________ "Got a problem? I've got the solution: Rocket Launcher."

Whoa! I just checked out the timeline o' doom and wow, there is so much... It does seem that reloaded changed some thing here and there. Over all I think I like the more simplified Reloaded history better.

I think the big highlights in the setting change between 1876 and 1879 are:
- The British formally entered the war as an ally to the CSA and took over Detroit in late 1876
- (Marshals Only): "Bloody Sunday" happened in late 1876 where a bunch of demons broke into the Cathedral of Lost Angels and killed parishioners but were "defeated" by Reverend Grimme. In reality, they were summoned by him and it was a big ritual that enabled Grimme's black magic mojo to appear as holy miracles beyond the scope of Lost Angels
- The Edict of '77 happened where Grimme declared Lost Angels to be a sovereign state (like the Vatican) and more or less declared that California belonged to him
- The Pinkertons were formed into the Agency in 1877
- Jefferson Davis was assassinated in 1878 and Eric Michelle is now president of the CSA
- The USA and the CSA have officially called a ceasefire to the Civil War.
- The rail barons got closer to Lost Angels. (Marshals Only): Wasatch was last seen burrowing underneath the Rocky Mountains.
