One thing I do miss from DLC that was not brought over to SW/DLR is the use of Blessings for Divine Intervention.
The Posse had a very memorable scene during Perdition's Daughter, where the Blessed in the party called down the Lord's Will to create a line of Hellfire on the ridge line behind Lady Carstairs, creating a torrent of water from the melted snow to extinguish her soul flame... But I digress!
So I have been thinking about a mechanic to use these in DLR. Firstly, has anyone been through this process?
My thoughts are in keeping with the text description and requirements;
| Quote: | | Only the most pious characters can call upon their deity for divine intervention. In game terms, the blessed must have a faith of at least 6 to use a Blessing |
So, a character with AB: Miracles, must have Faith at d12
Blessings are gained in the same manner, by being directly involved in lowering the Fear Level in an area.
Using a Blessing to gain a single use of a miracle that the character does not possess is moot, in DLR Blessed have access to all Powers. So the sole use is in attempting to activate a Divine Intervention (DI).
I would perhaps consider DIs to range from Heroic to Legendary Rank Powers (of which there are none of either officially?).
At a rough glance, any DI with a DLC TN of 11+ would be Legendary, anything below this Heroic.
So this then applies either -8 or -10 to the Faith roll to invoke the DI against a TN of 4. Hefty penalties - as they should be.
The Marshall applies modifiers as appropriate depending on the situation, i.e. saving a Church, or a member of the Faith, or a bunch of kids, etc. = positive modifier, selfish or outcomes that would be against the tenets of the particular Faith = negative modifiers or outright failure.
Now to go through the list and convert all the Interventions... |

My thoughts as someone who has only played Reloaded: it sounds like this is basically a really powerful blessing that can only be pulled off with great difficulty. That alone seems spiffy, although I'm not sure it's always necessary.
You're correct, there are not any Heroic or Legendary rank powers right now for the Blessed. The highest ones are Exorcism and Greater Healing which are Veteran (and there are no other Veteran rank powers for the Blessed). You might want to consider making some of the less potent Divine Inspirations Veteran level, as a -6 penalty means you have to roll a 10 or higher, which is bad enough for a Blessed because if you roll less, you take Fatigue.
I'm not sure the restriction of a d12 in Faith should be there: If you have less than that, it's hard enough (but not impossible) to pull off a miracle with a -8 or -10 roll. If you really want it to be unavailable for lower rank powers, maybe make it an edge with something like a d10 Faith prerequisite? |

Sounds like a Barrier spell with a Fire trapping and a really long length. He made his roll, and the good gods said "that's kind of awesome, we'll allow it at no extra penalties".
Given the way Reloaded Blessed work, all of their powers are Divine Interventions. The most direct ones just get reduced penalties, or even a bonus, because they appeal to the Good Guys In The Sky.
Convert the flavor (call upon God to do something awesome), not the mechanics (need X, does Y).
Best of luck. _________________ "Got a problem? I've got the solution: Rocket Launcher."

I see what you're both saying, the system is already there, there is no need to bring in anything new.
Just use existing Powers, and if the Blessed is praying for something especially... dramatic or over the top, apply positive modifiers or penalties as normal.
Thanks you've helped me to see this in a different light.
Praise the Lord! |
