maybe you could start with a war against fins, the good heros fight against the fins and then...
What I mean is, change to a Necessary Evil game.
But the truth is....talk with your players. Say them that you are uncomfortable that they are this killers. Tell them that you liked to play a superhero game. Tell them you need their help to reach this. Ask them what have to happen that they discover their conscience.
Tell them that you lost interest if they play ruthless super killers longer.
Its your game, too. You should have fun, too.
Maybe they need to encounter a previous modell that is even more sadistic, unmoral and ruthless. Some scientist tellthem that all labrats are this way. Its their destination to become like him.....or?
Or they meet a mentor, a superhero that show them that with great power come great responsibility.
But talk with your players about it. |

I've actually sat down and discussed the situation with them in our last session. They seemed to understand that becoming hardcore killers isn't the most effective way to survive in the world at hand. Especially when you "put one in the maid's temple" because she "saw too much" or killed one of the heavy plot point guys because he didn't immediately tell you what you wanted to know. Granted most of them are playing their hindrances especially our weregator but its very frustrating. And when I suggested dialing it back they gave me the "we're just playing our characters" argument.
I'm thinking a mentor character is a good idea. I think I'll write up someone that can negate powers and scare the crap out of them.
Also I think I'll throw them up against a group of "heroes" that can hopefully show them that they are actually the villains. (I already have this group written up, they are loosely based on the kids from the D&D cartoon from the early 80s) |

Have Judge Dredd show up, arrest several of them, take them to super-jail, and make them be unplayable but alive. "Killed" without killing them, because he's not a murderer. He's the law.
Obnoxious mentors will be poisoned (see: Pai Mei @ Kill Bill) or otherwise removed.
Hero teams will be treated like villains (by the players).
The other option is to say "screw it, they're villains" and change the entire campaign to Evil. It's my experience that every groups needs to do that at least once, just to get it out of their system.
Best of luck. _________________ "Got a problem? I've got the solution: Rocket Launcher."

I would play the angle of leaving clues that they're being manipulated into being evil. Make it a little too opportune to do some bad. Then give them a chance to redeem themselves. It is after all the intent of their creation.
If they go good, great, if not work in something more drastic. The "Judge Dredd" angle. A super hunter like the found in NE. Or the only survivor from the first batch of experiments. Sylar maybe? Someone bigger and badder bent on restoring order to the situation. |

My necessary Evil game started to get a bit out of control for a while. But when the group started killing innocent ciivilians, the locals turned against them, and the fins bombarded their base from orbit.
Then I ran all in a days work, but I was still worried that they would not get the message, so I resorted to emotional trickery. Before the session I had my 5 year old son draw some pics of the villains, (and label them). Additionally, I grabbed a few random drawings.
When the players were searching the burning apartments, one found a kids room with the drawings. It worked like a charm. The pcs not only went crazy about the pics, but they spent over thirty minutes narrating the events of the campaign that corresponded to the (random) pics. Now the pcs have started courting public opinion as a weapon.
More kids pics, thank you notes and pc action figures will follow. |

Your local tired parents. You've got to know someone with young kids. Just offer to watch one for a few hours. I've yet to meet a parent that would say no to that offer. _________________ "Got a problem? I've got the solution: Rocket Launcher."

That's because you forgot to administer the oaths of silence. You know, the ones that make their tiny vocal cords seize up when they try to blab. Rookie mistake, and the sort of thing that gets a posse of nosy adventurers kicking in your door.
... Of course, sometimes you want that, since it's an easy way to get powerful sacrificial victims to arrive, and they have some sweet loot. _________________ "Got a problem? I've got the solution: Rocket Launcher."

I was asked to babysit once, when I was 20, way back in the 80's.
My brother was at work still, and my sister-in-law had to leave for work.
I just happened to stop by after I got off work.
She said, if he acts up or fusses, he likes raisins. [my nephew was about 2, maybe younger.]
She left he started to fuss, so I fed hem raisins.
They never asked me to babysit again. [I didn't have to change his diaper later.] _________________ "I'm Hotep" |

Sorry to resurrect a year-old thread, but I'm prepping for my NE game starting in a few weeks and I've come across a problem: How do you reward the characters for completing a mission? One of the plot points mentions the characters having the opportunity to buy something, and I realized that I have no idea where the players would get money after the start of the game.
Anyone have advice for monetary/equipment rewards? _________________ Josh Leavitt, Editor

They don't have to buy it, they can come by it by other means, like, say, a gift.
I'm sure there is no normal economy what with the occupation. People probably have coupon books or something. Cold cash could be pretty worthless. (might even be an excuse for termination)

They're villains. They can easily get money and gear just by stealing it. I even had a quick mission once where Dr. Destruction had them "raise" $100,000. Our Bruce Wayne-style character decided to channel lots of funds, but most of it was stolen. _________________ Wild Card Creator: Any PDF. Any Setting. No Extra Cost.

That's a really good idea. Maybe I'll give them some art/bank/jewel heists in between plot points to keep the cash flowing. _________________ Josh Leavitt, Editor
